Economic Data Science Major - Philosophy, Objectives, and Academic Policies

Philosophy/purpose

The Master's Program in Economic Data Science aims to cultivate individuals who possess a multifaceted perspective and fundamental knowledge of various economic and social issues, and who can propose solutions by utilizing their expertise and skills in economics, mathematics, data science, and AI, thereby becoming a driving force for regional economies.

Educational goals

The Master's Program in Economic Data Science provides the following education in order to cultivate the human resources outlined in its philosophy and objectives.

  1. Students will acquire a multifaceted perspective and fundamental knowledge regarding various economic and social issues, as well as specialized knowledge and skills in mathematics, data science, and AI.
  2. To acquire advanced and specialized knowledge regarding various economic and social issues, and to develop the ability to contribute to society by proposing quantitative solutions to these problems.
  3. We publish research findings obtained by utilizing knowledge of economics, mathematics, data science, and AI, thereby gaining specialized and academically valuable insights.

Degree awarding policy

Graduate School of Economics awards the degree of "Master of Economic Data Science" to those who, in the Master's Program in Economic Data Science, acquire the required number of credits according to the prescribed study method, receive the necessary research guidance, and achieve the following learning outcomes through the examination of their submitted research paper and final examination.

  1. Possessing a multifaceted perspective and fundamental knowledge regarding various economic and social issues.
  2. Possessing expertise and skills in mathematics, data science, and AI.
  3. Possessing specialized and academically valuable knowledge on various economic and social issues, and being able to propose quantitative solutions to these problems.
  4. To conduct academic research on various economic and social issues by utilizing knowledge of economics, mathematics, data science, and AI, and to possess the necessary knowledge, skills, and motivation as a researcher or highly skilled practitioner toward the publication of research results.

Curriculum Development and Implementation Policy

Graduate School of Economics, in order to achieve the learning outcomes stipulated in the degree awarding policy, organizes and implements a systematic and sequential curriculum in the Master's Program in Economic Data Science, according to the following policy.

  1. With the primary objective of achieving learning outcome 1 as defined in the degree awarding policy, the course "Research Fundamentals" is offered as a compulsory subject in the first year, and "Economics" is offered as a graduate school lecture subject.
  2. With the primary objective of achieving learning outcome 2 as defined in the degree awarding policy, the program includes the "Research Fundamentals" course, as well as the "Mathematics, Data Science, and AI" course as a graduate school lecture course.
  3. With the primary objective of achieving learning outcome 3 as defined in the degree awarding policy, two "graduate school seminar" courses, "Economics Seminar" and "Data Analysis Practice Seminar," are offered from the first year, along with necessary research guidance.
  4. With the primary objective of achieving learning outcome 4 as defined in the degree awarding policy, necessary research guidance will be provided through the "Graduate School Seminar" course in the first year and the "Specific Theme Research" course in the second year, and an "Interim Report Meeting" for research papers will be established to allow students to receive advice from faculty members other than their supervising professor.
  5. In research guidance, a multi-faculty system is adopted, centered around the main supervisor. Guidance is provided to help students acquire the skills necessary to become researchers or highly skilled practitioners through data collection and analysis, writing, oral presentations, and research paper writing.

Admissions policy

Graduate School of Economics accepts applicants for its Master's program after confirming the following points.

  1. Applicants must possess the fundamental academic abilities in economics or data science necessary for studying this course, as well as a clear research plan.
  2. Applicants must possess the motivation to acquire the necessary specialized knowledge of economics and analytical skills using data science for the study of this course.
  3. Having a desire to mathematically analyze various problems related to the regional economy and society and propose solutions.
