  • Research guidance plan

    Research guidance plan for master's program

    In the second-year required course, "Specific Theme Research," students aim to complete their doctoral dissertation (research paper), receiving necessary research guidance primarily from their main supervisor during their second year. In addition to the supervisor (who will be the primary examiner for the dissertation), one faculty member scheduled to be a secondary examiner will also provide guidance and advice regarding the preparation of the research paper.

    During the entrance examination

    We will assess the student's research interests during the interview.

    Before enrollment

    We provide pre-enrollment education to prospective Graduate Schools students.

    First year

    April A graduate school orientation is held, and based on the "research plan" submitted by each Graduate Schools, a supervisor is determined. Graduate Schools students receive guidance on course selection from their primary and secondary supervisors. They also take a "seminar" or "special lecture I" or "special lecture II" taught by their supervisor, and, with their advice, select and register for courses from economics and data science subjects that are suitable for their research topic.
    In "Seminars," or "Special Topics I" and "Special Topics II," Graduate Schools learn the fundamental techniques and perspectives necessary for writing their research papers, and throughout the year, they clarify their individual research themes.
    September Each Graduate Schools will report to their supervisor on the progress of their research based on their individual research topic.

    Second year

    April A graduate school orientation will be held.
    Graduate Schools take a "Specific Theme Research" course (as taught by their academic advisor) offered in their second year, and then decide on and register for their second-year courses based on the advisor's advice. They also submit a research plan and title for their research paper.
    September, October I will submit an interim report on my research paper. I will receive guidance and advice from all faculty members in this department, including my academic advisor.
    January Submission of research paper
    February A final examination will be conducted through peer review of the research paper and an oral examination, followed by the submission of a thesis evaluation report. Based on these results, Graduate School of Economics Committee and Graduate Schools Committee will decide whether the student is accepted or rejected.

    Criteria and System for Examining Master's Thesis

    (1) Criteria for thesis review and final examination

    Graduate School of Economics awards the degree of "Master of Economic Data Science" to those who, in the Master's Program in Economic Data Science, acquire the required number of credits according to the prescribed study method, receive the necessary research guidance, and achieve the following learning outcomes through the examination of their submitted research paper and final examination.

    1. Possessing a multifaceted perspective and fundamental knowledge of various economic and social issues (DP1).
    2. Possessing expertise and skills in mathematics, data science, and AI (DP2).
    3. Possessing specialized and academically valuable knowledge on various economic and social issues, and being able to propose quantitative solutions to these problems (DP3).
    4. To conduct academic research on various economic and social issues by utilizing knowledge of economics, mathematics, data science, and AI, and to possess the necessary knowledge, skills, and motivation as a researcher or highly skilled practitioner toward the publication of research results (DP4).

    These evaluation criteria will be explained by the Dean Graduate School of Economics during the orientation held immediately after the entrance ceremony, based on the materials distributed. Furthermore, when students decide on their thesis topics between their first and second years, their academic advisors will provide further guidance on the evaluation criteria, and it will be made clear that theses that do not meet the criteria will be deemed unsuccessful.

    (2) Review System

    In this graduate school, a dissertation examination committee (one chief examiner and one co-examiner) is appointed for the dissertation examination, and the dissertation examination and final examination (oral examination) are conducted. The examination committee reports the results of the examination to the Graduate School Committee, and the decision on whether to accept or reject the dissertation is made by the Graduate School Committee. The Dean of the Graduate School reports these results to the President, and the President, after deliberation by Graduate Schools Committee, awards the degree (Master's).
