This lecture explores the Japanese Popular culture: the advantages of popular culture, the biases of popular culture as privileging certain social groups and the history of Japanese popular culture form Edo period to contemporary as well as globalization of Japanese popular media.

We will begin by exploring popular culture and associated media as a type of cultural media products that aim to be inclusive of a variety of readerships. We will explore advantages of popular culture as a bridge that transcends such social divides as socio economic status, education, age, etc. We will also address the inherent biases of popular culture as privileging certain social groups and positioning them as aspirational, as well as denying representation to minorities. We will briefly trace the history of Japanese popular culture form Edo period to contemporary and finally touch upon globalization of Japanese popular media and glocalization of such products as manga and anime.

Olga Antononoka is an independent researcher, formerly an associate professor of Kwansei Gakuin University. Current research: boys’ love dramas and manga and anime taste communities in Latvia.
