The Department of Policy Design provides studies that foster the ability to propose policies and the ability to collaborate to solve the problems of local communities and create a better society, with political science, economics and sociology as the academic foundation. In an age of declining population, falling birthrates and an aging population, policies for creating better local communities cannot be left to national and local governments. In addition to governments, the participation and cooperation of businesses, NPOs and other organizations, as well as people living in the local community, is essential (public-communal-private partnership).

Based on this concept, studies in the Department are structured around the three specialist areas: Public Administration, Economy and Industry and Civil Society. The Department’s faculty members specialize in a wide range of fields (besides the above, there are researchers in social welfare, business administration and cultural anthropology), and students learn from a multifaceted approach.

In the first year, students build a foundation for their studies in small-group seminars and introductory subjects; in the second and third years, they deepen their studies by participating in off-campus training at home and abroad; in the third and fourth years, they enter more specialized seminars to explore individual research themes.
