Grading policy for courses

Tohoku Gakuin University conducts academic performance evaluations and credit recognition in its courses based on the following policy, in order to ensure that the quality of learning outcomes stipulated in the "Policy on Awarding Degrees" is guaranteed.

1. Grades are determined by measuring and evaluating the extent to which the learning outcomes set as achievement targets for each course have been achieved throughout the course.
2. The learning objectives for the course must be appropriately established, taking the following points into consideration, and clearly stated in the syllabus.
   1. The goal should be written from the perspective of the student taking the course, and should describe the state or actions that should be achieved after completing the course.
   2. The objectives should be based on the positioning of the course within the degree awarding policy and the curriculum organization and implementation policy.
   3. The number of objectives must be appropriate to correspond to the diversity of learning outcomes defined in the degree awarding policy.
   4. Overall, the goals should be achievable by a significant proportion of students through the standard learning activities expected of them.
   5. The goal should be one whose degree of achievement can be judged as objectively as possible.
3. The specific methods for measuring and evaluating the degree of achievement of learning objectives in order to conduct grade evaluation must be clearly stated in the syllabus as the method of grade evaluation, taking the following points into consideration.
   1. It should consist of multiple evaluation methods that accommodate the diversity of achievement goals and evaluation criteria.
   2. Understanding the relationship between achievement goals and evaluation methods.
   3. Understanding the evaluation criteria for each evaluation method.
   4. It is important to know the weighting of each evaluation method.
   5. Specific evaluation criteria should be established for each evaluation method, and these criteria should be clearly stated.
4. The learning objectives, grading methods, and criteria specified in the syllabus must be carefully explained to students during class, along with any necessary supplementary information, to ensure thorough understanding. Furthermore, the learning objectives, grading methods, and criteria cannot be changed during the course period unless there are exceptional circumstances.
5. Grades will be determined based on the grading methods and criteria specified in the syllabus and during the course. Students who "fully achieve" the overall learning objectives will receive a Grade S (90-100 points), those who "achieve" the objectives will receive a Grade A (80-89 points), those who "almost achieve" the objectives will receive a Grade B (70-79 points), those who "achieve to some extent" will receive a Grade C (60-69 points), and those who "do not achieve" the objectives will receive a Grade D (59 points or less).
6. Regarding grading and its distribution, we will continuously review all courses using GPA and take steps to ensure that it is fair and appropriate based on the degree to which the learning outcomes set as achievement targets have been attained.
