Just when we thought the COVID-19 pandemic was over, humanity is now facing the disregard for human life in war, the devastation caused by natural disasters such as earthquakes and wildfires, and the "mercantilism" of the Trump administration, which views tariffs as an all-powerful tool. The world and Japan are on the verge of significant change.

At times like these, I am reminded of the "Prayer of Serenity" chanted by the American theologian Reinhold Niebuhr during World War II, a time of great global upheaval: "God, grant me the courage to change what I can change, the serenity to accept what I cannot change, and the wisdom to know the difference." Currently, we live amidst a "runaway train" of change brought about by the emergence of conversational generative AI (artificial intelligence) exemplified by Chat GPT, and on the other hand, a cycle of many people being struck by "sudden misfortune" due to war and natural disasters.

It would be a great pleasure for us, a university located in the heart of Sendai, the "City of Learning," if you could learn the wisdom to distinguish between "what can be changed" and "what should not be changed" from the many "public lectures" that Tohoku Gakuin University is offering to the public this year.

Haruki Onishi, President of Tohoku Gakuin University
