Features
In this era of globalization, recent historical research requires a broader perspective on Asia, transcending traditional frameworks such as Japanese history and East Asian history. Meanwhile, Asian societies are comprised of numerous ethnic groups and possess diverse ethnic cultures. Historical research must also incorporate the study of these ethnic cultures. Furthermore, it goes without saying that Asian history and ethnic culture are shaped by regional characteristics such as the natural and cultural environment. Environmental studies and regional studies are also important issues demanded by modern society. Based on this understanding, this department conducts interdisciplinary research on Asian cultural history, integrating the fields of Japanese history, Asian history, archaeology, and folklore.
