Learning in Faculty of Letters

In Faculty of Letters, we study "human beings" through "language." This learning involves a multifaceted and comprehensive examination of human existence, lifestyles, culture, and history, approaching fundamental and holistic questions such as "What is a human being?" and "What does it mean to live well?" Based on the knowledge and ways of thinking acquired through this learning process, we cultivate the abilities and attitudes necessary to coexist with others. The motto of Faculty of Letters, "Think for Yourself, Think for the World," directly expresses this aim.

Faculty of Letters is a place that fosters the ability to identify and solve problems for the benefit of others and the world, while also cultivating individuals who know themselves, think for themselves, and act together with others.

Faculty of Letters has 4 departments and 10 specializations.

Faculty of Letters consists of four departments: Department of English, Department of General Humanities, Department of History, and Department of Education. In the Departments of Department of English, Department of General Humanities, and Department of History, completion of a field specialization is recognized upon graduation according to the study requirements of each department. In Department of English, it is also possible to complete a major or minor field specialization. Department of Education does not have field specializations, but its specialized education is based on the pillars of education studies, child education, English education, intercultural understanding education, and teaching practice.

Learning in the Faculty of Faculty of Economics

Faculty of Economics aims to cultivate individuals who can understand how people, businesses, and governments make decisions in the economic and social spheres, and the impact those choices have on society, enabling them to solve increasingly diverse social challenges.

Through lectures and exercises, students will learn how to propose hypotheses using theoretical analysis, and how to verify them using data and fieldwork, tackling various economic issues. Through this learning, they will develop the ability to analyze the current state of the Japanese and Tohoku economies, understand their mechanisms, predict future economic trends, and propose policies.

Faculty Overview

The Faculty Faculty of Economics employs faculty members with outstanding research achievements, allowing undergraduate students to learn broadly about various topics in modern society and economics. Graduates acquire advanced theoretical knowledge and contribute to the development of the Japanese economy, as well as to the development of local communities. To date, the faculty has produced many talented individuals who have gone on to work in various fields, primarily in industry, as well as in professions such as teachers, civil servants, tax accountants, and certified public accountants.

Faculty of Business Administration

Learning in Faculty of Business Administration

Our goal is to systematically learn management theories, use that knowledge to solve problems faced by companies and local communities, and contribute to the formation of a better local community.

To realize this kind of education, we have set the goal of "integrating theory and practice" and expanded our specialized curriculum. These include lectures that analyze case studies of local companies and propose management strategies to business managers, and lectures that involve practical learning about regional tourism industry development and inn management in collaboration with the proprietress of an inn in Miyagi Prefecture. In addition, we offer seminar courses that allow students to study specialized fields of business administration in small groups from their first year.

Faculty of Business Administration provides ample opportunities and settings for students to deeply study theories related to corporate management and to apply those theories in practice.

Faculty Overview

Faculty of Business Administration provides students with the ability to solve problems faced by companies and communities through systematic learning of business administration theory. Faculty members conducting cutting-edge research in management, marketing, and accounting/finance guide students in both theoretical learning and the analysis of case studies and data. The faculty and resources in business administration and accounting are among the best in the Tohoku region. Graduates are active in a wide range of industries, primarily in the Tohoku region. The faculty also produces many company executives and accounting professionals (such as certified public accountants).

Faculty of Law

Learning in Faculty of Law

At Faculty of Law, students study law, a subject deeply connected to our society. They systematically study the broad and complex law from the basics to its applications, and develop the ability to use the knowledge and thinking skills they acquire to be active in a variety of fields. Under the motto "Think legally, for human dignity," we aim to cultivate individuals who can contribute to society in a wide range of fields, including national and local government and private companies.

Specialized education through a course system

In the third year, students will deepen their learning by choosing specialized education subjects from three courses: Policy and Administration, Corporate Law, and Legal Professionals, depending on their future career path and academic interests.

Learning in the Faculty of Faculty of Engineering

Engineering is a field of study that develops technologies to enrich the lives of humankind and returns them to society, based on an understanding of fundamental sciences such as mathematics, physics, and chemistry.It often deals with applied research that is directly related to daily life, and one of the characteristics of the field is that the developed technologies are accepted by society in a relatively short cycle.

Located on a single campus in the heart of Sendai, our university offers opportunities for interaction that transcends departmental and academic boundaries, allowing students to absorb the perspectives and essential elements necessary for implementing developed technologies in society, including those related to economics, management, and law.

We hope that students will consider, from a broad perspective, what technologies are necessary for the happiness of Japan, the world, and humanity, and that through foundational lectures and research activities, they will hone their own sensibilities and senses, fostering a mindset for new technological development.

Faculty Overview

Faculty of Engineering consists of three departments that cover important technologies that form the foundation of society. Department of Mechanical Engineering and Intelligent Systems covers manufacturing technologies including automobiles and robotics; Department of Electrical and Electronic Engineering covers electrical systems such as power and control, information and communications, semiconductors, and devices; Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering covers environmental civil engineering, architecture, and design, covering everything from basics to applied and advanced technologies through classroom study, seminars, and research. Additionally, by earning the required credits, it is possible to acquire various national qualifications. We train engineers who will support Japan, a technology-driven nation, from the very foundation.

Faculty characteristics

Faculty of Liberal Arts is built upon a long and rich tradition of higher education. However, beyond that, our Faculty of Liberal Arts of Liberal Arts aims to cultivate new talent capable of responding to the changes in modern society and the unpredictable future society through the exchange and integration of a wider range of academic fields. The four departments—Human Sciences, Language and Culture, Information Science, and Regional Planning—will develop by complementing and strengthening each other, addressing a variety of challenges.

The local community is the "field" where we live. There are many diverse and complex issues there, and resolving them requires the ability to study multiple academic fields and understand things comprehensively. At Faculty of Regional Studies of Regional Studies (FoReSt), students can study geography, earth sciences, ecology, sociology, social welfare, education, economics, business administration, political science, cultural anthropology, and more, and the breadth of academic fields makes it truly worthy of being called a "forest of knowledge."

Faculty of Informatics

Learning in Faculty of Informatics

Modern society is overflowing with information. There are a wide variety of problems to be solved. To enrich our lives, it is essential to be able to find and utilize useful information from vast amounts of data, and this ability will be required in the coming "super smart society," regardless of whether you are in the humanities or sciences. Our faculty aims to equip students with the basic knowledge to handle data and information, as well as the ability to identify, solve, and communicate problems, and to develop human resources who can thrive in a variety of industries.

Learn a wide range of subjects and cultivate a multifaceted perspective.

Students will study mathematical sciences, which deal with data mathematically; information sciences, which process data using programming and artificial intelligence (AI); and social sciences, which identify societal challenges and return new value created from data to society.

Faculty of Human Sciences

Learning in Faculty of Human Sciences

To gain a deeper understanding of the human mind, we must not only focus on the mind itself, but also on the body, which is intimately connected to the mind, and the society created by the connections between people with minds. The importance of psychology and behavioral science in managing mental and physical health has become even more recognized in the wake of the recent series of earthquakes and heavy rain disasters, as well as the prolonged COVID-19 pandemic. At our faculty, students will comprehensively study the fundamentals, applications, and clinical aspects of psychology, as well as related fields such as sports science and sociology.

Eligibility requirements for the Certified Clinical Psychologist examination and teaching licenses (health and physical education) are also available.

This department includes subjects necessary to qualify for the Certified Clinical Psychologist examination.

* In addition to becoming a certified psychologist and social researcher, you can also obtain eligibility to take the examination for a Type 1 teaching license in health and physical education (junior and senior high school).

Faculty of International Studies

Learning in Faculty of International Studies

Faculty of International Studies cultivates students who understand the various phenomena occurring in a globalized society and consider what they can do to contribute. While focusing on Japan and East Asia, students will also gain a broader perspective on the world, learn about the diversity of languages, cultures, and societies, and identify issues that need to be resolved. By interacting with faculty members who collaborate using multiple languages, transcending differences in national origin and field of expertise, we provide an environment that makes the world feel more familiar, like a microcosm of a globalized society.

Aiming to reach a level where you can "use" the language.

Students will continuously study one of the following languages—English, Chinese, or Korean—for three years to develop practical skills. They can also choose from three specialized subject areas based on their interests and obtain a basic qualification as a Japanese language teacher.

Liberal Arts Education Center

Characteristics of the center

In 2023, Tohoku Gakuin University launched a new liberal arts curriculum, coinciding with the establishment of new faculties and departments and the relocation of its campus. Since the founding of Sendai Theological Seminary in 1886, the university has emphasized liberal arts education based on its founding principles of "respect for individual dignity and the development of character based on evangelical Christianity." Building on this tradition, and in order to cultivate the abilities required in an increasingly information-driven and globalized society, the university has introduced new university-wide common courses open to all Tohoku Gakuin University students, regardless of their field of study (humanities or sciences) or faculty/department.

To further deepen academic research

At our university, for those who wish to further advance the academic research activities initiated in each faculty, we have established six graduate schools (12 majors) that cover all faculties, providing high-quality education by a well-staffed faculty. Each graduate school is divided into a master's program (2 years) [the Graduate Graduate School of Business Administration and the Economic Data Science major Graduate School of Economics are master's programs (2 years)] and a doctoral program (3 years).
