In the mandatory "Thesis Seminar," students receive guidance primarily from their academic advisor during the first and second semesters of their second year, with the goal of completing their thesis. For the completion of the master's thesis, in addition to the academic advisor (who will be the main examiner in the thesis defense), one faculty member scheduled to be a co-examiner will also provide guidance and advice on the thesis writing process.

During the entrance examination

We will assess the student's research interests during the interview.

First year

April	A guidance session for graduate students will be held, and each Graduate Schools will be assigned a research advisor based on the "research plan" they have submitted. Each Graduate Schools takes either "Seminar I" or "Seminar II" or "Research I" or "Research II" taught by their supervising professor, and then, with their advice, decides on courses that are suitable for their research topic and registers for them. In "Seminar I" and "Seminar II," or "Research I" and "Research II," Graduate Schools learn the fundamental techniques and perspectives necessary for writing their thesis, and spend the entire year clarifying their individual research themes.
september	Each Graduate Schools reports on the progress of their research based on their individual research topic and receives confirmation from their supervisor.
december	I will tentatively decide on the title of my master's thesis and report it to my supervisor.

2nd year

April	Each Graduate Schools continues to take "Seminar III" and "Seminar IV" or "Research III" and "Research IV," both taught by their academic advisor, as they did in their first year. They then decide on and register for their second-year courses based on the advisor's advice. A draft of the master's thesis is submitted to the supervisor. The supervisor, in consultation with faculty members in related fields, provides guidance and advice on the thesis writing. Each Graduate Schools submits their "Master's Thesis Title Form" on the designated date and time. At this stage, one main supervisor (advisor) and one co-supervisor for the master's thesis are determined.
October	Each Graduate Schools reports on the progress of their master's thesis to their supervisor and receives confirmation.
January	Submission of Master's Thesis
February	A final examination will be conducted, consisting of a thesis review and an oral examination, followed by the submission of a thesis evaluation results report. Based on these results, the Graduate School of Letters Committee and Graduate Schools Committee will make a decision on acceptance or rejection after deliberation by the Departmental Conference.

(1) Criteria for thesis review and final examination

The master's thesis will be evaluated based on the following basic requirements as an academic research paper.

1. ① The selection of the theme must be clear (DP1).
2. ② The research topic must be based on a thorough understanding of previous research in the research field (DP1, 2).
3. ③ Accurate collection, analysis, and interpretation of research materials (DP2, 3).
4. ④ The research must demonstrate original insights, ideas, or novel perspectives (DP2).
5. ⑤ The paper has logical consistency in its structure and content, and the logical development is clear (DP3).
6. ⑥ The language expression is accurate and the format conforms to the prescribed standards (DP3).

(2) Review System

In this program, each Graduate Schools is assigned a thesis examiner (one chief examiner and one co-examiner) at the beginning of their second year to review their master's thesis. After thesis review and an oral examination are conducted, the results are recorded in the thesis examination report. The thesis examination report is then reviewed by the program council and submitted to the Faculty of Graduate School of Letters Committee, where a decision is made on whether the thesis is acceptable or unacceptable. The Dean of the Faculty of Letters reports this result to the President, who, after deliberation by Graduate Schools Committee, awards the degree (Master's).

The doctoral program focuses on training researchers, and therefore includes "English Language and Literature Seminars (I-IV)" as a more advanced specialized course. In "English Language and Literature Seminars," a joint supervision system is adopted with a main supervisor and a co-supervisor. Based on the submitted "Research Plan," the seminars, which last two years, focus on reading original texts and research papers in the research-related field, with the main and co-supervisors providing guidance and advice in their respective areas of expertise until the completion of the doctoral dissertation.

April	Faculty members from the graduate school will provide guidance, and based on the "research plan" submitted by each Graduate Schools, a primary and secondary supervisor will be determined. Each Graduate Schools will take "Seminar on English Language and Literature I" and "Seminar on English Language and Literature II" with their academic advisor, and in consultation with their advisor, will determine their learning objectives for the end of their first year.
september	Each Graduate Schools reports on the progress of their research based on their individual research topic and receives confirmation from their supervisor.
February	Each Graduate Schools is required to prepare a "Research Progress Report" and submit it to their supervisor.

2nd year

April	As in their first year, each Graduate Schools will continue to take their supervising professor's "Seminar on English Language and Literature III" and "Seminar on English Language and Literature IV," receiving guidance tailored to their doctoral dissertation topic through these classes.
september	Each Graduate Schools reports on the progress of their research based on their individual research topic and receives confirmation from their supervisor.
February	Each Graduate Schools submits an "Interim Report on Doctoral Dissertation" to their supervisor.

Third year

April	Each Graduate Schools takes "Thesis Seminar I" and "Thesis Seminar II" with their supervisor, receiving the necessary guidance and advice to complete their doctoral dissertation.
December to January	I will submit my doctoral dissertation.
January to February	Four examiners (one chief examiner and three co-examiners) will be selected to conduct thesis review and an oral examination as the final examination, and a thesis review results report will be submitted. Based on the results, the Graduate School of Letters Committee and Graduate Schools Committee will make a decision on acceptance or rejection after deliberation by the Department Council.

The evaluation criteria for a doctoral dissertation are that it must meet the following basic requirements as an academic research paper.

3. ③ Accurate collection, analysis, and interpretation of research materials (DP2).
4. ④ The research must be original in its content and perspective, and be able to make an academic contribution to the field of research (DP2).
5. ⑤ The paper has logical consistency in its structure and content, and the logical development is clear (DP3).
6. ⑥ The language expression is accurate and the format conforms to the prescribed standards (DP3).

(2) Review System

In this department, for the examination of doctoral dissertations, a dissertation examination committee (one chief examiner and three co-examiners, one of whom is an external expert researcher) is appointed. A final examination consisting of a dissertation review and an oral examination is conducted, and the results are recorded in the dissertation examination results report. The dissertation examination results report is discussed by the departmental council and then submitted to the Graduate School of Letters Committee, where a decision is made on whether the dissertation is acceptable or unacceptable. The Dean of the Graduate School reports this result to the President, who, after deliberation by Graduate Schools Committee, will confer the degree (doctorate).
