For all students enrolled in faculties and departments that will cease accepting new students, we will ensure that they maintain their affiliation with their chosen department and the educational environment there until graduation. We, the faculty and staff, will also fulfill our responsibility to provide support for their student life, career paths, and job placement.

In today's increasingly globalized, technologically advanced, and information-driven society, we aim to cultivate a new type of cultured individual who can address the various problems facing human life.

Faculty Overview

In 1989, the Faculty of Liberal Arts was established at the Izumi Campus as the university’s fifth faculty. At the time of its founding, it consisted of a single department with three majors (the Department of Liberal Arts, with majors in Human Sciences, Linguistics, and Information Sciences), and its enrollment was limited to just 200 students per academic year.Small-class instruction was rigorously implemented, and its personalized guidance was widely recognized by society; despite widespread concerns about the declining birthrate, the school was blessed with many outstanding applicants.

However, as society as a whole changes, education, which is linked to these changes, is also compelled to reform. In 2005, a large-scale reorganization was carried out. A new Department of Regional Design was established, and existing majors were elevated to departments, resulting in a new system of one faculty and four departments (Department of Human Science, Department of Language and Culture, Department of Information Science, and Department of Regional Design). The enrollment capacity doubled to 400 students per year (440 students from 2018), and the faculty took a significant step up to a size of 2,000 students to meet the various demands and expectations of modern society. There are now more than 90 full-time faculty members who support small-group education, and their academic fields broadly cover the basic classifications of humanities, social sciences, and natural sciences, and their academic methods have come to include everything from lectures and experiments to fieldwork.

In April 2022, Faculty of Liberal Arts will celebrate its 34th anniversary. With well over 9,000 graduates, the first graduating class is now in their 50s, playing active roles in their families, workplaces, and communities. This success is underpinned by the faculty's philosophy: "a new type of cultured individual who can address the various problems facing human life." Originally, Faculty of Liberal Arts institutionally guaranteed interdisciplinary collaboration between departments, emphasizing the interdisciplinary and comprehensive nature of scholarship. Today, we are once again reminded that this stance towards scholarship is also connected to cultivating diversity and inclusiveness in daily life and society.

We will continue to be a cradle and base for nurturing well-rounded individuals who will thrive in modern society.
