A brief history of Tohoku Gakuin University
- 1886 (Meiji 19)
- With the cooperation of Mr. Masayoshi Oshikawa and Mr. WE Hoy, the "Sendai Theological Seminary" was established with the aim of training Christian evangelists.
- 1891 (Meiji 24)
- The school's name was changed to "North Japan College." The academic system was revised to consist of a two-year preparatory course, a four-year undergraduate course, and a three-year theology course, establishing its form as a modern educational institution.
- 1901 (Meiji 34)
- DB Schneider assumed the position of Principal. With the Christian spirit of "dedication and sacrifice" as his motto, he dedicated himself to fulfilling the mission of the institution's existence.
- 1918 (Taisho 7)
- The specialized faculties will be reorganized into the Department of Theology, the Department of Humanities, the Department of Teacher Education, and the Department of Commerce.
- 1941(昭和16)年
- With the start of the Pacific War, the Christian school faced a difficult path.
- 1946(昭和21)年
- Tohoku Gakuin Vocational School was established, including departments of English Literature and Economics. Partnership with the U.S. Mission Board was restored.
- 1949(昭和24)年
- The vocational school was upgraded to a university based on the Fundamental Law of Education and the School Education Law, and a Faculty of Letters and Economics (Department of English and Department of Economics) was established.
- 1951(昭和26)年
- Establishment of "Tohoku Gakuin Educational Corporation" approved.
- 1959(昭和34)年
- The university established a second division of the Faculty of Letters and Economics.
- 1962(昭和37)年
- A new Faculty of Faculty of Engineering (Departments of Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, and Applied Physics) will be established in Tagajo City.
- 1964(昭和39)年
- The Faculty of Letters and Economics was split into Faculty of Letters first division (Department of English Department of Christian Studies and Department of History), second division (Department of English), Faculty of Economics part (Department of Economics Department of Commerce), and second division (Department of Economics). Graduate Schools Graduate School of Letters (Master's Program) established.
- 1965(昭和40)年
- Graduate Schools established Graduate School of Economics (Master's Program) and Faculty of Law.
- 1966(昭和41)年
- Graduate Schools established Graduate School of Letters (doctoral program) and Graduate School of Engineering (master's program).
- 1967(昭和42)年
- Faculty of Engineering established a Department of Civil Engineering.
- 1968(昭和43)年
- Graduate Schools established Graduate School of Economics (doctoral program) and Graduate School of Engineering (doctoral program).
- 1975(昭和50)年
- Graduate Schools Graduate School of Law (Master's Program) was established.
- 1979(昭和54)年
- Graduate Schools Graduate School of Law (doctoral program) was established.
- 1986(昭和61)年
- A ceremony was held to commemorate the 100th anniversary of the company's founding.
- 1988(昭和63)年
- The liberal arts courses for the Faculty of Letters, Economics, and Faculty of Law will be moved to the Izumi Campus.
- 1989 (Heisei 1)
- A new Faculty of Liberal Arts Arts (Departments in Human Sciences, Language Science, and Information Science) will be established at the Izumi Campus.
- 1990(平成2)年
- The Department of Civil Graduate School of Engineering (Master's Program) was established Graduate Schools School of Engineering.
- 1992(平成4)年
- The Department of Civil Graduate School of Engineering (Doctoral Program) was established Graduate Schools School of Engineering.
- 1994(平成6)年
- Graduate Schools Graduate School of Human Informatics established a Master's program in Human Information Science.
- 1996(平成8)年
- Graduate Schools Graduate School of Human Informatics established a doctoral program in Human Information Science.
- 1997(平成9)年
- Graduate Schools Graduate School of Letters has established specializations in European Cultural History and Asian Cultural History (Master's Programs).
- 1999(平成11)年
- Graduate Schools Graduate School of Letters has established Master's (Doctoral) Program in Asian Historical and Cultural Studies.
- 2000(平成12)年
- Faculty of Letters' Department of English (Evening Division) and the Faculty of Faculty of Economics' Department of Economics (Evening Division) have been discontinued. A day and evening class system has been introduced for Faculty of Letters Department of English and the Faculty Faculty of Economics Department of Economics and Commerce.
- 2001(平成13)年
- Faculty of Letters Department of Christian Studies was renamed the Department of Christian Studies, the Faculty Faculty of Economics' Department of Commerce was renamed Department of Business Administration, and the Faculty of Faculty of Liberal Arts Arts' Department of Language Science was renamed the Department of Language and Culture.
- 2002(平成14)年
- Master's Program in Business Administration was established within Graduate Schools Graduate School of Economics. The departments Faculty of Engineering Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Applied Physics, and Civil Engineering were renamed: Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Applied Physics, and Environmental Civil Engineering, respectively.
- 2004(平成16)年
- Graduate Schools School of Law, Department of Legal Practice (Law Graduate Schools) was established.
- 2005(平成17)年
- Faculty of Letters The Department of History was upgraded to Department of History, and the three majors of Faculty of Liberal Arts were elevated to departments, becoming Department of Human Science, Department of Language and Culture, and Department of Information Science respectively, and a new Department of Regional Design was established.
- 2006(平成18)年
- Faculty of Engineering will be reorganized into Department of Mechanical Engineering and Intelligent Systems, the Department of Electrical and Information Engineering, the Department of Electronic Engineering, and Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering.
- 2009(平成21)年
- Faculty of Economics Restructured the following programs: Faculty of Economics and Department of Economics, and established a new program at Department of Co-existing Society Studies. The programs at Faculty of Economics and Department of Business Administration were restructured into Faculty of Business Administration and Department of Business Administration. Enrollment for the evening programs at Faculty of Economics, Department of Economics, and Department of Business Administration has been suspended. The programs at Graduate Schools, Graduate School of Business Administration, and Master's Program in Business Administration have been established.
- 2010(平成22)年
- Graduate Schools Graduate School of Engineering established a Master's program in Electronic Engineering, and renamed its Civil Engineering program to Environmental and Construction Engineering.
- 2011(平成23)年
- Faculty of Letters has been reorganized. The Department of Christian Studies has ceased accepting new students. A new Department of General Humanities has been established.
- 2012(平成24)年
- The Department of Applied Physics (doctoral program) Graduate Schools Graduate School of Engineering will be abolished, and the Department of Electronic Engineering (master's program) will be converted into a doctoral program.
- 2014(平成26)年
- Graduate Schools School of Law, Department of Legal Practice (Law Graduate Schools) has suspended student recruitment.
- 2015(平成27)年
- Faculty of Letters Department of English Enrollment for the evening program has been suspended.
- 2016(平成28)年
- Graduate Schools School of Law's Department of Legal Practice (Law Graduate Schools) has been abolished.
- 2017(平成29)年
- Faculty of Engineering was reorganized. The Department of Electronic Engineering ceased accepting new students. The Department of Electrical and Information Engineering was renamed the Department of Department of Electrical and Electronic Engineering. A new Department of Information Technology was established.
- 2018(平成30)年
- A new Department of Education will be established within Faculty of Letters (April).
- 2023 (Reiwa 5)
- The Gobashi Campus opened. The Faculty Faculty of Economics, Faculty of Engineering, and Faculty of Liberal Arts were reorganized. The Department of Co-existing Society Studies, Department Department of Information Technology, Department Department of Human Science, Department of Language and Culture, Department of Department of Information Science, and Department of Regional Design ceased accepting new students. Faculty of Regional Studies (Department Department of Regional Community Studies and Department of Policy Design), Faculty of Informatics Science (Department of Data Science), Faculty of Human Sciences (Department of Psychology and Behavioral Sciences), and Faculty of International Studies (Department of International Studies) were newly established. - Graduate Schools Graduate School of Economics will establish a Master's program in Economic Data Science.
