About second language classes
(For students enrolling in 2023 or later)
- For students who enrolled before the 2023 academic year, the course registration methods differ depending on the department. Please check the curriculum schedule and timetable for your respective department.
- For those who enrolled in 2023 or later, whether a subject is a "required elective" or an "elective" will vary depending on the department. Please check the curriculum schedule for your respective department.
- We offer four languages as second languages: German, French, Chinese, and Korean.
1年
- We recommend taking the same language course for both [Language A] and [Language B].
- The second semester's [○○ Language IB] course is content-wise continuous with the first semester's [○○ Language IA] course. Taking only [○○ Language IB] is not recommended.
- For those who want to thoroughly learn the fundamentals of the language, those who wish to continue deepening their understanding of the language and culture in their second year and beyond, and those who are considering studying abroad at a partner institution, we recommend taking courses in both the first and second semesters.
2年
- We recommend taking the same language for both Language IIA and Language IIB.
- In the second year, students deepen their understanding of the language they learned in their first year. They also further deepen their knowledge of the cultural sphere in which that language is spoken.
- [Language IIA] and [Language Communication A] can be taken simultaneously (taking only one is also possible). The same applies to B in the second semester.
3年
- We recommend taking the same language course for both Language III A and Language III B.
- In the third year, students comprehensively enhance their language skills acquired so far. This program is recommended for those who want to use their language skills in their careers or those aiming to pursue Graduate Schools studies.
Notes on course registration in the first year
- Some departments require a second foreign language as an elective. Please check the departmental curriculum table for details.
- If you wish to take both courses in the first semester (2 credits) and second semester (2 credits), please register for "○○ Language IA" and "○○ Language IA" respectively. If you wish to take only the first semester course (2 credits), please register for "○○ Language IA" only.
- Please check the timetable to find where the "○○ Language IA" and "○○ Language IB" classes you wish to take are located, and then register for them.

- Students who wish to take only the first semester ("○○ Language IA") should note points ① and ② below. Students who wish to take both the first semester ("○○ Language IA") and the second semester ("○○ Language IB") should note points ① to ④ below.
- ① Both "○○ Language IA" and "○○ Language IB" classes are held twice a week.
- ② The letters and numbers in "〇〇 Language IA d1" (in this example, [d1]) refer to a pair of two lessons per week. You cannot register with different combinations of letters and numbers.
- ③ The same applies to the later "○○ Language IB a, b, c..." courses, as described in ① and ② above.
- ④ If you wish to take German, French, or Chinese in the second semester, please apply for the same class offered as the "○○ Language IA" course you took in the first semester, using the same alphabetical and numerical designation (a1, a2, d1, d2, etc.) for the "○○ Language IA" course. For example, if you took "○○ Language IA d1" in the first semester, please register for "○○ Language IA d1" in the second semester.
- ⑤ If you wish to take Korean language courses, all classes will use the same textbook and progress at the same pace. Since all levels are the same, you can take any class you like, regardless of the alphabet, in both the first and second semesters, according to your own timetable.
Q. What happens if I don't apply for a class in the second semester that has the same alphabetical and numerical designation as the one I took in the first semester?
A. If you stay in the same class, you only need one textbook for both the first and second semesters. However, if you move to a different class in the second semester, you will need to purchase a different textbook used in that class.
moreover…
If students are in the same class, the second semester's lessons will begin in line with the progress made in the first semester. However, if students are in different classes in the first and second semesters, they will use different textbooks, and therefore the pace of instruction may differ slightly.
Notes on course registration in the second year
- In your second year, you will deepen your understanding of the language you learned in your first year. You will also further deepen your knowledge of the cultural sphere in which that language is spoken. Therefore, we recommend that you continue to study the same language you studied in your first year.
- If you take "Language IIA" in the first semester and "Language IIB" in the second semester, we recommend taking the same language course.
- You can take "Language IIA" and "Language Communication A," or "Language IIB" and "Language Communication B" together.
