Regarding credit recognition through external certification examinations

Credit recognition for English courses based on English proficiency test scores (for students admitted in 2020 and later)

For students admitted in 2020 and later, the method for recognizing credits for English courses based on English proficiency tests designated by the university will be as follows. Application procedures will be handled by the Center for Foreign Language Education. For details, students admitted in 2020-2022 should refer to the "Curriculum Regulations" of their respective faculties, and students admitted in 2023 and later should refer to the "Tohoku Gakuin University Curriculum Regulations."

① The certification exams to be taken and the grades required for credit recognition.
  • Cambridge English Exam: 140 points or higher
  • Eiken (Practical English Proficiency Test) (First and Second Stages): Passing Level 2 and scoring 1980 points or higher.
  • GTEC: 960 points or more
  • IELTS: 4.0 or above
  • TEAP: 225 points or higher
  • TEAP CBT: 420 points or more
  • TOEFL iBT: 42 points or more
  • TOEIC(L&R)/TOEIC(S&W): 790 points or more
② Courses for which credits are awarded.
  • Foreign language subjects in Category 1, "English IA," "English IB," "English IIA," and "English IIB" (all compulsory subjects) for all departments in Faculty of Letters except Department of Education
  • Faculty Faculty of Economics and Faculty of Business Administration (students admitted in 2020-2022): Foreign Language Subject Category 2 "Foreign Language Communication" (Elective Subject)
  • *You can choose up to two subjects (2 credits) from the above subjects that you have not yet taken (have not earned credits for).
  • *For students admitted to Faculty of Economics or Faculty of Business Administration (2020-2022 academic year), "Foreign Language Communication" is available to those who have already earned credits for "English IIA" and "English IIB".
  • *Courses that you applied for and were approved for during the first semester registration period (including first semester courses) will be removed from your registration and approved. This will free up credits in your registration limit, allowing you to add other courses during the second semester registration modification period. If you wish to add courses, please do so during the second semester registration period.
  • *When applying for credit for a course you are currently studying, the final evaluation will be based on the credit-granting evaluation score, not the evaluation score given by the instructor. Please consider this carefully before applying.
③ Grade evaluation when credit is awarded
Depending on your performance on the certification exam, you will receive a score of either 85, 90, 95, or 100 points.
The details of the relationship between the results of each certification exam and the overall performance evaluation are as follows:

*However, for students entering Faculty of Business Administration (2020-2022 academic year), "Foreign Language Communication" will be "certified" regardless of the evaluation score if the grades in ① above are met.

④ When to apply for credit recognition
  • First application period: August 3rd (Mon) - 7th (Fri), 2026
  • Late application period: December 7th (Mon) - 11th (Fri), 2026
  • *You can only apply once while you are enrolled at the school.
  • *Applications are limited to certification exams that were certified within 24 months prior to the 1st of the month in which the application is accepted. However, for certification exams where the certification date is not indicated on the certificate, the date of the exam may be considered the certification date.
⑤ When credit recognition is granted
  • Within the academic year in which the application for credit recognition was submitted
    Basically, applications submitted in the first semester are approved by the time the first semester grades are announced, and applications submitted in the second semester are approved by the start of the new academic year's course registration period.
    • *For further details, please contact the Foreign Language Education Center or the Academic Affairs Division after submitting your application.
    • *Courses for which credit has been awarded will be treated as completed, so you do not need to include those courses in the maximum number of credits you can register when registering or modifying courses after credit has been awarded.

Please print the application form below, fill in the required information, affix your seal, and submit it to the counter.

  • *The original document will be returned after verification.
  • *If you are using a digital certificate, please show the digital certificate screen on your My Page to the staff when submitting a printed copy of the digital certificate.
