To all students studying in Faculty of Business Administration: Learning with Purpose

Students will systematically and systematically pursue their studies in business administration according to the curriculum provided by Faculty of Business Administration. Incidentally, according to the dictionary "Digital Daijisen" (Shogakukan), a curriculum is defined as "an arrangement of educational content according to the learning stage." High schools also had educational programs and timetables. What is significantly different from high school is that at university, with the exception of some required subjects, students must choose their own subjects from a large group of subjects included in the curriculum and proceed with their studies.

So, how can one proactively choose courses from the diverse range of business administration subjects and deepen their learning? This is where purpose becomes important. One approach to career development in business administration is the idea of "living with purpose." This involves understanding who you are now, defining your future self as a purpose or goal, and then clarifying what is necessary to achieve that purpose. The book "Purpose, Meaning + Passion" (Diamond, 2021), edited by the Harvard Business Review editorial staff, states that by setting a purpose, a guiding light becomes visible, connecting your present self with your future self.

It is well known that Shohei Ohtani, who is currently attracting a lot of attention, set the goal of being "drafted first overall by eight professional baseball teams" during his high school years, and used a mandala chart to meticulously record the plans and actions he would take to achieve that goal. This shows that Ohtani was strongly conscious of his purpose from his high school days and carved out his own career (see "The Mandala Chart Used by Shohei Ohtani: The Secret of the 9-Square Thinking Method That Can Also Be Used in Work," Mynavi News, December 18, 2023).

Students, please set a purpose for the person you aspire to be by the time you graduate. At the same time, make an effort to understand who you are now. According to the book mentioned above, by reflecting on what you prioritized when making decisions and taking action in difficult situations, you can learn about your current strengths and weaknesses, as well as your abilities and values. Look back at the past and recall how you thought and acted in challenging situations. Then, while talking with your family, friends, and teachers, think carefully about your future self. Needless to say, university is a place of learning where you acquire the knowledge and abilities necessary to achieve the goals you have set forth. When choosing courses, select the courses necessary to achieve your goals in a rational, systematic, step-by-step, and proactive manner. By "learning with purpose," you should be able to feel the significance and meaning of what you learn in each lecture and maintain your motivation and passion for learning.
