Early period
Research guidance plan for the first stage of doctoral program

In the mandatory "Special Engineering Seminar" and "Master's Training in Engineering," research guidance, primarily from the supervising professor, is provided during the first and second semesters of the first and second years, with the aim of completing the master's thesis. In addition to the supervising professor (who will be the main examiner in the thesis defense), faculty members scheduled to serve as co-examiners in the thesis defense (which consists of one or more faculty members) will also provide guidance and advice on the preparation of the master's thesis.

During the entrance examination
During the interview, we will assess the progress the student has made on their graduation research, their understanding of and interest in the research, and their future life plans and aspirations.
First year
April A graduate school orientation will be held, and each Graduate Schools will decide which courses they wish to use the teaching assistant system for. Each Graduate Schools will take the "Special Engineering Seminar" and "Master's Training in Engineering" courses taught by their supervising professor, and with their advice, will decide which courses to take that are suitable for their research topic and register for those courses.
In the "Special Engineering Seminar" and "Master's Training in Engineering," Graduate Schools learn fundamental experimental and analytical methods related to the research necessary for writing their thesis, and carry them out throughout the year on their individual research themes.
september Each Graduate Schools reports on the progress of their research based on their individual research topic and receives confirmation from their supervisor. Depending on the progress of their research, they will also actively participate in domestic or international academic conferences and present their cutting-edge research orally or in poster format.
december Each Graduate Schools will report on the progress of their research based on their individual research topic within their department through oral presentations or other means.
March Each Graduate Schools reports on the progress of their research based on their individual research topic and receives confirmation from their supervisor. Depending on the progress of their research, they will also actively participate in domestic or international academic conferences and present their cutting-edge research orally or in poster format.
2nd year
April Each Graduate Schools, continuing from their first year, will decide which courses to take using the teaching assistant system, if they wish. Each Graduate Schools will take the "Special Engineering Seminar" and "Master's Training in Engineering" courses taught by their supervising professor, and with their advice, will decide on their second-year courses and register for them. Each Graduate Schools will create a "Research Plan" after thorough discussion with their supervising professor. The supervising professor will consult with faculty members in related fields regarding the content of the plan and provide guidance and advice on the writing of the master's thesis. Each Graduate Schools will submit a "Master's Thesis Title Notification" on the designated date and time. At this stage, one main examiner (supervising professor) and one or more co-examiners will be determined for the master's thesis.
september Each Graduate Schools reports on the progress of their master's thesis to their supervisor for review. Depending on the progress of their research, they are also expected to actively participate in domestic or international academic conferences and present their cutting-edge research orally or in poster format.
december Each Graduate Schools will give an interim presentation within their department, such as an oral presentation, on the progress of their research based on their individual research topic.
January Submission of the master's thesis.
February A final examination will be conducted through thesis peer review and oral examination, and a thesis evaluation results report will be submitted. Based on the results, the pass/fail decision will be made after deliberation by the Department of Graduate School of Engineering Committee, the Graduate School Committee, and Graduate Schools Committee.
Criteria and System for Examining Master's Thesis
(1) Criteria for thesis review and final examination

The evaluation criteria for a master's thesis will be that it meets the following basic requirements as an academic research paper.

  1. ① The selection of the theme must be clear (DP1, 2).
  2. ② It must have the structure and format of an academic research paper (DP3, 4).
  3. ③ It must possess originality, novelty, usefulness, reliability, and potential for development (DP1-4).
    In the process of developing research by utilizing critical thinking skills based on foundational and specialized knowledge, and ultimately publishing research results as papers, originality, novelty, usefulness, reliability, and development are all necessary factors, and these relate to all four learning outcomes (1 to 4) outlined in the degree awarding policy.
(2) Review System

In this department, each Graduate Schools is assigned a thesis examiner (one chief examiner and one or more co-examiners) at the beginning of their second year to review their master's thesis. After thesis review and final oral examination are conducted, the results are recorded in the thesis examination results report. The thesis examination results report is then discussed by the departmental council and submitted to the Graduate School of Engineering Committee, where a decision is made on whether the thesis is acceptable or unacceptable. The Dean of the Graduate School reports this result to the President, who, after deliberation by Graduate Schools Committee, will award the degree (Master's).

Late period
Research guidance plan for doctoral students

The doctoral program focuses on training researchers, and therefore includes "Special Engineering Practical Training" and "Internship Training" as more advanced specialized courses. Furthermore, students are required to take interdisciplinary foundational courses designed to provide a broad overview of engineering. These interdisciplinary foundational courses include courses (including special lectures) offered in the master's programs of each department within the Graduate Graduate School of Engineering, as well as courses approved by the Graduate School of Engineering Committee. In the "Doctoral Training in Engineering," a joint supervision system is adopted between the main supervisor (primary examiner) and the co-supervisor (secondary examiner) with the aim of completing the doctoral dissertation. Based on the submitted "Research Plan," students actively conduct experiments and exercises in research-related fields, with the main and co-supervisors providing guidance and advice in their respective areas of expertise until the doctoral dissertation is completed.

Based on the "Research Plan" submitted by each Graduate Schools, a co-supervising professor (secondary supervisor) will be determined in consultation with the primary supervisor (main supervisor). In addition, each Graduate Schools will decide on their learning objectives for the end of their first year in consultation with their supervising professor.

Depending on the progress of their research, they will also actively participate in domestic or international academic conferences and present their cutting-edge research orally or in poster format.

March Each Graduate Schools reports on the progress of their research based on their individual research topic and receives confirmation from their supervisor. Each Graduate Schools will take the "Doctoral Training in Engineering" course taught by their supervising professor, and after thorough discussions with their professor, will receive guidance and advice on writing their doctoral dissertation.
september Each Graduate Schools reports on the progress of their master's thesis to their supervisor for review. Depending on the progress of their research, they are also expected to actively participate in domestic or international academic conferences and present their cutting-edge research orally or in poster format.

April Continuing from the second year, students will choose courses in which they wish to utilize the teaching assistant system. Each Graduate Schools will take the "Doctoral Training in Engineering" course taught by their academic advisor, engage in thorough discussions with their advisor, and receive the necessary guidance and advice to complete their doctoral dissertation.
september Each Graduate Schools reports on the progress of their master's thesis to their supervisor for review. Depending on the progress of their research, they are also expected to actively participate in domestic or international academic conferences and present their cutting-edge research orally or in poster format.
december Each Graduate Schools will give an interim presentation within their department, such as an oral presentation, on the progress of their research based on their individual research topic.
January Submission of doctoral dissertation.
January to February Three examiners (one chief examiner and two co-examiners, one of whom is an external expert researcher) will be selected to conduct a final examination consisting of thesis review and oral examination, and a thesis review results report will be submitted. Based on the results, the pass/fail decision will be made after deliberation by the Department Meeting, the Graduate School of Engineering Committee, and Graduate Schools Committee.
Criteria and System for Examining Doctoral Dissertations
(1) Criteria for thesis review and final examination

The evaluation criteria for a doctoral dissertation are that it meets the following basic requirements as an academic research paper.

  1. ① It must be structured and formatted like an academic research paper (DP1-3 until FY2023, DP3 and 4 from FY2024 onwards).
    To produce a well-structured and professionally formatted academic paper, one must possess a broad perspective, specialized knowledge and critical thinking skills, highly specialized and academically valuable insights, and the knowledge, skills, and awareness necessary for an independent researcher. For students admitted before 2023, these relate to all three learning outcomes outlined in the degree awarding policy, while for students admitted from 2024 onward, they relate to learning outcomes 1, 3, and 4 outlined in the degree awarding policy.
  2. ② It must possess originality, novelty, usefulness, reliability, and potential for development (DP1-3 until FY2023, DP1-4 from FY2024 onwards).
    In the process of developing research by utilizing critical thinking skills based on foundational and specialized knowledge, and ultimately publishing research results as papers, originality, novelty, usefulness, reliability, and potential for development are all essential factors. These relate to all learning outcomes 1 through 3 in the degree awarding policy for students admitted before the 2023 academic year, and to all learning outcomes 1 through 4 in the degree awarding policy for students admitted from the 2024 academic year onward.
  3. ③ Possessing sufficient research ability and academic knowledge to conduct research activities independently (DP2, DP3 until FY2023, and DP2, DP3 from FY2024 onwards).
(2) Review System

In this department, a dissertation review committee (one chief examiner and two co-examiners, one of whom is an external expert researcher) is appointed for the examination of doctoral dissertations. After the dissertation review and final oral examination are conducted, the results are recorded in the dissertation review report. The dissertation review report is then discussed by the departmental council and submitted to the Graduate School of Engineering Committee, where a decision is made on whether the dissertation is acceptable or unacceptable. The Dean of the Graduate School reports this result to the President, who, after deliberation by Graduate Schools Committee, will confer the degree (doctorate).
