Graduate Graduate School of Engineering "Teaching Policy"

Master's Program
Degree awarding policy
Applicable to students entering in the 2024 academic year and beyond.

Graduate School of Engineering awards the degree of "Master of Engineering" to those who, in the first stage of the doctoral program, acquire the required number of credits in accordance with the prescribed study method, receive the necessary research guidance, and are deemed to have achieved the following learning outcomes through the examination of their submitted master's thesis and final examination.

  1. Possessing a broad perspective, fundamental knowledge, and critical thinking skills in engineering.
  2. Possessing specialized knowledge in several specific topics related to engineering.
  3. Possessing specialized and academically valuable knowledge regarding research topics in engineering.
  4. The ability to write academic papers on engineering-related topics, utilizing the necessary knowledge and skills as a researcher, and to publish the methods and results of such research.
Curriculum Development and Implementation Policy
Applicable to students entering in the 2024 academic year and beyond.

In order to ensure that students achieve the learning outcomes stipulated in the degree awarding policy during the master's program, Graduate School of Engineering will organize and implement a systematic and sequential curriculum in accordance with the following policies.

  1. With the primary objective of achieving learning outcome 1 as defined in the degree awarding policy, students are permitted to take not only subjects specific to their major but also related subjects from other majors.
  2. With the primary objective of achieving learning outcomes 2 and 3 as defined in the degree awarding policy, the "Master of Engineering Training" and "Special Engineering Seminar" are established, and necessary research guidance is provided.
  3. In research guidance, students will develop the skills necessary to become researchers through oral presentations and the writing of their master's theses.
  4. With the primary objective of achieving learning outcome 4 as defined in the degree awarding policy, a "Master's Thesis" is required, and in addition, "Advanced Topics in Technology Management" and "Advanced Topics in Intellectual Property" are offered, with one of them being mandatory.
Admissions policy
Applicable to students entering in the 2024 academic year and beyond.

Graduate School of Engineering accepts applicants for its Master's program after confirming the following points.

  1. Applicants should possess the fundamental academic skills, flexible thinking abilities, and a proactive attitude towards learning in their specialized field.
  2. Possessing a strong passion for future societal changes and advancements in science and technology within one's specialized field, and having the motivation to identify and solve problems independently.
  3. Having the desire to acquire specialized knowledge and insight, and to contribute to the development of society from an international perspective.
Doctoral course
Degree awarding policy
Applicable to students entering in the 2024 academic year and beyond.

The Graduate Graduate School of Engineering awards the degree of "Doctor of Engineering" to those who, in the doctoral program, acquire the required number of credits in accordance with the prescribed study method, receive the necessary research guidance, and are deemed to have achieved the following learning outcomes through the examination of their doctoral dissertation and final examination.

  1. Possessing a broad perspective, specialized knowledge, and critical thinking skills in engineering.
  2. The ability to theoretically and experimentally analyze various problems in the field of engineering using advanced expertise in engineering.
  3. Possessing highly specialized and academically valuable knowledge regarding research topics in engineering.
  4. The ability to write academic papers on engineering-related topics, utilizing the knowledge and skills necessary for an independent researcher, and to publish the methods and results of that research.
Up to students entering in the 2023 academic year

The Graduate Graduate School of Engineering will award the degree of "Doctor of Engineering" to those who, in the doctoral program, have acquired 16 credits in accordance with the prescribed curriculum regulations, received the necessary research guidance, and whose doctoral dissertation has been reviewed and who have demonstrated the following learning outcomes through the final examination.

  1. Possesses a broad perspective, specialized knowledge, and critical thinking skills in engineering.
  2. They possess highly specialized and academically valuable knowledge regarding research topics in engineering.
  3. Possessing the knowledge, skills, and awareness necessary to be an independent researcher, for the continuous conduct of academic research in engineering and for the publication of its results.
Curriculum Development and Implementation Policy
Applicable to students entering in the 2024 academic year and beyond.

In order to ensure that the learning outcomes stipulated in the degree awarding policy are reliably achieved in the doctoral program, the Graduate Graduate School of Engineering will organize and implement a systematic and sequential curriculum in accordance with the following policies.

  1. Interdisciplinary foundational subjects are offered primarily to achieve learning outcome 1 as defined in the degree awarding policy. In addition, if a student has not completed either "Advanced Topics in Technology Management" or "Advanced Topics in Intellectual Property" in the first two years of study, they will be required to take one of these subjects.
  2. With the primary objective of achieving the learning outcome 2 stipulated in the degree awarding policy, the "Doctoral Training in Engineering" is established and made compulsory. In addition, "Internship Training," "Special Training in Engineering," and "Special Practical Training in Engineering" are also offered.
  3. The primary objective is to achieve learning outcome 3 as defined in the degree awarding policy, and a doctoral dissertation is required, along with necessary research guidance.
  4. With the primary objective of achieving learning outcome 4 as defined in the degree awarding policy, research guidance will be provided through oral presentations and doctoral dissertation writing, fostering the advanced abilities necessary for a researcher.
Up to students entering in the 2023 academic year

In order to achieve the learning outcomes stipulated in the degree awarding policy, Graduate School of Engineering organizes and implements a systematic and sequential curriculum in the doctoral program, according to the following policies.

  1. The primary objective of completing interdisciplinary foundational subjects is to achieve learning outcome 1 as defined in the degree awarding policy. In addition, if students have not completed "Advanced Topics in Technology Management" or "Advanced Topics in Intellectual Property" in the first semester, they will be required to take one of these subjects.
  2. With the primary objective of achieving the learning outcome 2 stipulated in the degree awarding policy, the "Doctoral Training in Engineering" is established and made compulsory. In addition, "Internship Training," "Special Training in Engineering," and "Special Practical Training in Engineering" are also offered.
  3. The primary objective is to achieve learning outcome 3 as defined in the degree awarding policy, and a doctoral dissertation is required, along with necessary research guidance.

  1. Applicants must possess a motivation for enrollment and a research topic that aligns with the objective of this program, which is to train researchers in engineering.
  2. Applicants must possess a high level of general academic ability (including foreign languages) necessary for studying in this course.
  3. Students must possess highly specialized and academically valuable knowledge related to the research topic necessary for their studies in this course.
Up to students entering in the 2023 academic year

Graduate School of Engineering accepts applicants for its doctoral program after confirming the following points.

  1. Applicants possess a motivation for admission and a research topic that aligns with the objective of this program, which is to train researchers in engineering.
  2. Applicants must possess a high level of general academic ability (including foreign languages) necessary for studying in this course.
  3. Students possess the highly specialized knowledge of engineering necessary for studying in this course.
  4. They possess specialized and academically valuable knowledge regarding the research topic.

Graduate School of Engineering "Organizational Policy for Faculty Members"

Graduate School of Engineering will organize its faculty based on the following principles:

  1. The full-time faculty of Graduate School of Engineering shall consist of individuals who have been hired as full-time faculty members of the University of Tohoku Gakuin, possessing the abilities and qualities required in the "Basic Policy for Recruiting Faculty Members of Tohoku Gakuin University" and the basic attitudes required in the "Basic Attitudes Expected of Faculty Members of Tohoku Gakuin University," and who have been deemed qualified to serve as full-time faculty members of Graduate School of Engineering through a review process.
  2. The evaluation for item 1 will be conducted through an assessment of research and educational achievements, from the perspective of suitability for teaching courses in the master's program and for supervising students' research and education.
  3. In the master's program, full-time faculty members with qualifications equivalent to or higher than those for the master's program are responsible for teaching courses and supervising students' research and education.
  4. In the doctoral program, teaching courses and supervising students' research and education are assigned to full-time faculty members who have been deemed qualified to teach courses and supervise students' research and education in the doctoral program based on an evaluation of their research and educational achievements. In principle, faculty qualifications are reviewed every five years to determine their eligibility.
  5. Faculty members other than full-time faculty members shall be comprised of individuals who, through the same review process as full-time faculty members, are deemed qualified to teach courses in the undergraduate and graduate programs, and to provide research and educational guidance to students.
  6. The determination and amendment of the regulations concerning the review criteria and procedures related to items 1, 4, and 5, and the individual reviews based thereon, shall be carried out by the Graduate School of Engineering Committee and approved by Graduate Schools Committee.
