Education in this department

Characteristics of specialized education

This department has three main areas of education: Information Science, Mathematical Science, and Social Science. In the first and second years, in order to learn "Data Science," we have specialized foundational courses to help you understand the basics of the three areas of education and their relationships. These courses are designed so that you can learn from the basics, regardless of the level of learning you have accumulated before entering university. From the third year onward, you will belong to a seminar led by a professor in one of the three areas of education, and learn more specialized knowledge and skills.

The Mathematical Sciences group is designed to cultivate data analysis skills, and students will also learn about security measures such as cryptography necessary for handling data. Department of Information Science group primarily deepens knowledge of programming and AI while developing data utilization skills. The Social Sciences group provides a deeper understanding of the structure and mechanisms of society. In addition, students will learn how to create new value and give back to society by utilizing their data analysis and data utilization skills.

Introduction to Research Areas

In order to cultivate highly skilled individuals who can analyze the vast amounts of data generated daily in modern society, create new value, and give back to society, Department of Data Science has established three research areas: information science, mathematical science, and social science. Each area is staffed with professors who possess expertise in that field, creating a cutting-edge educational and research system.

In the field of information science, we provide education and research in IoT (Internet of Things), AI, robotics, computers, networks, VR, web systems, applications, and multimedia. In the field of mathematical science, we provide education and research in algebra and geometry applied to information encryption, probability theory, statistics and analysis for constructing mathematical models of various phenomena, and life sciences and astronomy from an information perspective. In the field of social science, we provide education and research in social statistics, which applies statistics to social science, social network analysis, which understands society mathematically, analysis of media and information and communication technology and human society, and welfare and disaster prevention.
