Focusing on character development based on Christian principles, this program cultivates a creative critical spirit that allows for constant relativization of common sense and norms, while traversing the past and present through an interest in language.

Furthermore, in order to clearly express our philosophy and objectives, we have adopted the following motto.

"Think for Yourself, Think for the World"

Faculty Overview

History: Faculty of Letters carries on the history of Tohoku Gakuin.

The history of Faculty of Letters is intertwined with the 136-year history of Tohoku Gakuin University. Its origins lie in Faculty of Letters and the Faculty of Theology, which were established as specialized departments under the Vocational School Ordinance of 1904 (Meiji 37).

As a university under the new system, its history began with the establishment of the Faculty of Humanities and Economics Department of English in 1949 (Showa 24), andIn 1964 (Showa 39), the Faculty of Humanities and Economics was reorganized into the Faculty of Humanities and Economics (Faculty of Letters) with First and Second Divisions, and the Faculty of Science and Engineering (Faculty of Economics) with First and Second Divisions; within the Faculty of Science and Engineering (Faculty of Letters), First Division, two departments were established: the Department of Christian Studies (later renamed the Department of Theology) and the Department of History.

In 2000 (Heisei 12), with the abolition of the Faculty of Letters Division 2, a day and evening course system was introduced in Department of English (student recruitment for the evening main course was suspended in 2017), and in 2005 (Heisei 17), the Department of History was reorganized into a Department of History.

In 2011, the Department of Christian Studies was reorganized into Department of General Humanities, continuing its mission of training pastors and evangelists while creating a learning environment for thought and philosophy, culture and art, and religion and theology.

In 2018, Department of Education was established, further strengthening Tohoku Gakuin's tradition as a teacher training institution that has produced numerous teachers.

Through these repeated reorganizations, Faculty of Letters continues to provide education based on Christianity for the development of human character.

Organization: Faculty of Letters consists of 4 departments and 10 specializations.

Faculty of Letters consists of four departments: Department of English, Department of General Humanities, Department of History, and Department of Education. In Department of General Humanities and Department of History, completion of a field of specialization is recognized upon graduation according to the study requirements of each department.
