Research topic

My specialization is Japanese medieval history. I am interested in the activities and relationships of various people who lived in medieval society, and my research focuses on the following three points:

1. Research on the history of medieval political systems and local communities (e.g., the Hiraizumi Fujiwara clan, the Kamakura Shogunate, the Muromachi Shogunate, the lord-vassal system, stone monuments, etc.)
2. A collection of historical materials related to the Tohoku region during the medieval period.
3. Restoration of historical landscapes in areas affected by the Great East Japan Earthquake and Tsunami

Research Topics

Collecting historical materials related to the Tohoku region during the medieval period.

History is the study of reconstructing and giving meaning to past societies by collecting, reading, and analyzing historical materials (documents and written materials) such as ancient documents and records. Currently, one of my projects is to create a collection of historical materials that will form the basis of this study. My main goal is to compile ancient documents related to the Tohoku region from the Kamakura period to the Muromachi period. Of these, I have completed the two-volume work "Nanboku-cho Ibun: Tohoku Edition" (Tokyodo Publishing) concerning the Nanboku-cho period. I am continuing to collect historical materials related to the Tohoku region from the Kamakura and Muromachi periods while participating in the compilation of local government histories in various regions.

I am also interested in Itabi, a type of memorial stone monument from the medieval period, and am conducting research on Itabi in Miyagi Prefecture. By collecting and examining the written materials inscribed on Itabi, I am working to reconstruct the nature of local beliefs and the historical landscape.
