Subjects Taught Information Science Seminar (3rd year), Integrated Research (4th year)
■Research Themes

Space as seen through sound

■Information science seminar (3rd year)

This exercise will use bats as an example to cover fundamental concepts in order to understand biological information processing.

Bats perceive their environment by emitting sounds and listening to the echoes that reflect back, in order to hunt for prey in the dark. To understand bat information processing, we analyze the sounds they emit and the echoes that reflect back. We will actually write a program ourselves to analyze the sound.

■ Comprehensive Research (4th year students)

Our comprehensive research aims to understand biological information processing and apply it to actual information processing systems, using bats as our subject. The main themes are listed below.

  • Proposal and verification of a model for converting sound information into spatial information.
  • Design and evaluation of the transmitter/receiver to build an actual system.
  • Measurement and analysis of sounds emitted by bats to understand their environment.
