Accreditation Program for Mathematical, Data Science, and AI Education

This educational program is accredited by the Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology under the "Accreditation System for Mathematical, Data Science, and AI Education Programs (Literacy Level)."

In light of the arrival of Society 5.0, Tohoku Gakuin University has established the above-described educational program to cultivate individuals who will drive next-generation data and digital technology-driven transformation (DX: Digital Transformation) in society. By completing the designated subjects, students will acquire a foundation in mathematics, data science, and AI. Students who meet the following completion requirements while enrolled at Tohoku Gakuin University will be certified as having completed this program, and this will be displayed as a badge on TG-folio and noted in their diploma supplement.

Completion Requirements

Regardless of your faculty or department, the graduation requirement is to complete and earn credits for two subjects from the TG Basic Subject Group (Intellectual Foundations): "Fundamentals of Statistical Thinking (Elective Required)" and "Fundamentals of the Information Society (Elective Required)."

The content covered in each course is generally as follows. Please refer to the syllabus for each course for details.

Foundations of statistical thinking
By learning the fundamentals of understanding statistics and data correctly, you will develop the ability to interpret, manipulate, and explain data.
The foundation of the information society
In this course, you will learn about the changes occurring in society regarding data utilization, the data being used in society, the application areas of AI and their technological background, and the latest trends.

Characteristics of the university-wide general education course "TG Basic" and its relationship to this educational program

TG Basic consists of "Human Foundation" subjects that deepen understanding of Christianity and cultivate rich humanity, and "Intellectual Foundation" subjects that hone the intelligence necessary for social life. The knowledge gained here will be an asset for living a better and more intelligent life after entering society, regardless of your field of specialization. For example, subjects such as "Fundamentals of Mathematical Thinking," "Fundamentals of Statistical Thinking," "Fundamentals of Scientific Thinking," and "Fundamentals of the Information Society" will equip you with the foundation for "Data Science," which involves using various data to find new value. In this educational program, we particularly want all students to acquire "Fundamentals of the Information Society" and "Fundamentals of Statistical Thinking." There is no prerequisite knowledge required to take these courses. There is no distinction between humanities and science students, and no special mathematical knowledge is required, so please register with confidence.

Academic year 2021 (Implemented by the University-wide Education Organization Working Group in 2021)
item Opinions expressed
Course content and methods, educational effectiveness
  • Regarding the content and methods of instruction, as well as the educational effectiveness, it will be necessary to continue to verify these aspects based on the "Student Survey for Improving Instruction" conducted by the university, as has been done in the past.
Improvement of the syllabus content
  • Regarding improvements to the syllabus content, given that these are university-wide courses, it would be best to establish a system where course instructors discuss and review the content, and then have it approved at a university-wide education committee meeting or similar forum.
  • We believe it is necessary to implement practical data science education using real-world data from companies and other organizations within the subjects that make up this program.
  • The actual data must be "data provided based on agreements with companies, etc.," so perhaps we could select from the 12 cooperation agreements that our university currently has in place with local governments and private companies that are willing to cooperate.
University-wide improvement in the number of students enrolled and the enrollment rate.
  • To improve the number of students enrolling and the enrollment rate across the entire university, it will be necessary to proactively engage students by offering the course as a university-wide common course, creating a webpage to encourage enrollment, and providing explanations during course guidance sessions.
Person in charge of managing and operating the educational program
  • The person responsible for managing and operating the educational program should be the Director of the University-Wide Educational Organization, since the program will be offered as a university-wide common course.

Future development of this educational program

Tohoku Gakuin University is considering expanding its education in mathematics, AI, and data science, starting with this educational program. We will work to enhance the curriculum by considering how to cultivate the new knowledge and experience necessary for students to engage in future social activities, taking into account the opinions of students, as well as collaborating with experts from local companies, public organizations, and other educational and research institutions.
