About the Mathematics, Data Science, and AI Education Program
“Commonly known as: MDASH (Mathematics, Data science and AI Smart Higher education)”
~Develop the ability to think about the power of data in order to thrive in Society 5.0~
What is MDASH?
The "Mathematics, Data Science, and AI Education Program" is an educational program that teaches mathematics, data analysis, and artificial intelligence (AI). Its aim is to develop problem-solving skills using data, and it covers the fundamentals of statistics and programming, as well as the mechanisms of AI. This program cultivates the data utilization skills and logical thinking abilities necessary for future society.
MDASH is not a certification. The biggest benefit of taking the program is that you will acquire skills that will be useful in the future! Because this program teaches content that is directly related to employment and careers, you can aim to become a "data-savvy person" that is in demand in any industry.
In short, MDASH can broaden your future options.
MDASH at Tohoku Gakuin University
In light of the arrival of the Society 5.0 era, Tohoku Gakuin University has established the "Tohoku Gakuin University Mathematics, Data Science, and AI Education Program" to cultivate human resources who will drive next-generation data and digital technology-driven transformation (DX: Digital Transformation) in society.
There are two programs:
- Mathematics, DS, and AI Literacy Program
- Basic Program in Mathematical Science, Digital Logic, and AI Applications
These two programs have the following differences:
Mathematics, DS, and AI Literacy Program (University-wide)

The Literacy Program provides students with a foundation in mathematics, data science, and AI by completing designated subjects. Students who meet the following completion requirements while enrolled at Tohoku Gakuin University will be certified as having completed this program, and this will be displayed as a badge on TG-folio and noted in their diploma supplement.
Completion Requirements
- Students entering in 2023 or later
-
- "Fundamentals of Statistical Thinking" (TG Basic Subject Group (Intellectual Foundations), 1st Year)
- "Fundamentals of an AI Society" (General Education Course, 1st Year Students)
- Students admitted in 2021 and 2022
-
- "Fundamentals of Statistical Thinking" (TG Basic Subject Group, 1st Year)
- "Fundamentals of the Information Society" (TG Basic Subject Group, 1st Year)
*This educational program is certified by the Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology (MEXT) under the "Mathematics, Data Science, and AI Education Program Certification System (Literacy Level)" (since 2022).

Basic Program in Mathematical Sciences, Data Science, and Applied AI (for students entering in 2023 or later)

The Applied Foundations Program is an educational program designed to cultivate even more advanced talent. By completing the designated subjects, students can acquire a broad range of fundamental knowledge and practical analytical techniques in mathematics, data science, and AI, and develop the foundational academic skills necessary to apply them to their own specialized fields. Students who meet the following completion requirements while enrolled at Tohoku Gakuin University will be certified as having completed this program, and this will be displayed as a badge on TG-folio and noted in their diploma supplement.
Completion Requirements
- All faculties (students admitted in 2023 or later)
-
- "Fundamentals of an AI Society" (General Education Course, 1st Year Students)
- "Inquiry (Advanced) through Data Utilization" (TG Basic (Problem-Based Research), 2nd Grade)
- "Fundamentals of Data Science Applications" (3rd year, Faculty Faculty of Engineering, Specialized Subject)
*Students from faculties other than Faculty of Engineering will take courses in other faculties.
- *This educational program is certified by the Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology (MEXT) under the "Mathematics, Data Science, and AI Education Program Certification System (Applied Basic Level)" (from fiscal year 2025).
- *The programs for Faculty of Economics and Faculty of Engineering were launched in 2023 and received accreditation from the Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology in 2024, but from 2025 onwards they have been integrated into the above-mentioned programs for all faculties.
