Tohoku Gakuin University
Mathematics/DS/AI
Applied Fundamentals Program
(For students entering in 2023 or later)
~Develop the ability to think about the power of data in order to thrive in Society 5.0~
*This educational program is certified by the Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology under the "Certification System for Mathematical Sciences, Data Science, and AI Education Programs (Applied Basic Level)".

The Applied Foundations Program is an educational program designed to cultivate more advanced human resources than the Literacy Program. By completing the designated subjects, students can acquire a broad range of fundamental knowledge and practical analytical techniques in mathematics, data science, and AI, and develop the basic academic skills necessary to apply them to their own specialized fields. Students who meet the following completion requirements while enrolled at Tohoku Gakuin University will be certified as having completed this program, and this will be displayed as a badge on TG-folio and noted in their diploma supplement.
Completion Requirements
Completing the following three subjects is required for graduation. The general content of each subject's lectures is as follows. Please refer to the syllabus for each lecture for details.
*The following syllabus is a reference version from previous years. Please check the latest syllabus for the 2026 academic year.
- Fundamentals of Data Science Applications (Students other than Faculty of Engineering students can take this course as it is offered by other faculties or departments) (PDF: 226KB)
- This course aims to provide a foundation in data science essential for realizing Society 5.0, and to develop practical application skills using real-world data. It covers both univariate and multivariate statistics as foundational data science topics, incorporating practical exercises using the statistical language R and engaging in discussions.
- The Foundations of an AI Society (PDF: 235KB)
- While learning about the history of modern society's development, we will also learn about AI society. In particular, we will understand the various roles of data that form the basis of AI society, acquire the knowledge and ethical awareness necessary for us to live in an AI society.
- Data-driven research (advanced) (PDF: 204KB)
- Learn about the use of generative AI and important considerations. You will learn a wide range of topics, from various operation methods and idea generation techniques to practical application examples.
The relationship between the "Applied Fundamentals Program" and the "Literacy Program"
Our university's literacy program is an educational program made up solely of general education subjects, which could be likened to "reading," "writing," and "arithmetic." The Applied Foundation Program, on the other hand, involves taking related specialized subjects in addition to general education subjects, and aims to acquire the skills necessary to realize the integration of specialized fields and data science by combining learning in data science with learning in one's own specialized field within one's faculty.

Future development of this educational program
At Tohoku Gakuin University, we are working to enhance our curriculum by considering how to cultivate the new knowledge and experience necessary for students to engage in social activities in the future. This will be done in collaboration with experts from local businesses, public organizations, and other educational and research institutions, as well as incorporating feedback from students. Details of this initiative will be announced on our website in the future.
