Basic Policy of Tohoku Gakuin University
In formulating the "Basic Policy of Tohoku Gakuin University"
President Haruki Onishi
In universities, which are institutions of higher education responsible for education and research, the term "student-centered" has come into use. The term "study" in "student-centered" is also poised to replace the traditional term "learning." This is because while "learning" implies a passive attitude of studying, such as "being taught or learning," universities, as institutions of higher education, require a more proactive attitude of learning, where education and research produce results through prior preparation and subsequent reporting and presentation, and students "master" these results.
This book, "Basic Principles of Tohoku Gakuin University," begins with the university's founding principle of "character education based on evangelical Christianity," then outlines the school motto, LIFE LIGHT LOVE, and the basic educational principles. Based on these, it lists the "three educational policies" that are constructed: the "degree awarding policy (diploma policy)," the "curriculum organization and implementation policy (curriculum policy)," and the "admissions policy."
Students, as learners, strive to achieve the diploma policy, which is the "degree awarding policy," and the "evaluation policy," or assessment policy, measures how well they are achieving their goals. Universities must use this assessment policy to continuously monitor student growth, measure and visualize the outcomes of education and research, clearly demonstrate quality assurance in education and research, and improve areas that need improvement.
In addition, this book lists the fundamental policies related to education and research as a whole at Tohoku Gakuin University. These include student support, international exchange, faculty ethics, research, social collaboration and contribution, the organizations that implement education and research, each faculty and Graduate Schools, and the medium- to long-term plan, "TG Grand Vision 150."
Currently, Japanese universities are each making efforts to visualize learning outcomes. This book outlines the foundation for visualization at Tohoku Gakuin University. We hope that faculty, staff, and students of Tohoku Gakuin University will keep this book on hand and use it as a "compass" to return to whenever they have questions.
