Philosophy and Goals

Philosophy/purpose

We train practical construction engineers who have an ethical outlook based on Christian principles, have acquired the education necessary for working adults, and have steadily mastered basic specialized knowledge.

Educational goals

The education in the Department of Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering aims to equip students with the following skills:

  • Acquire the perspective of an environmental construction engineer who has a multifaceted perspective on global environmental issues and an understanding of the regional characteristics of Tohoku [Engineer with a multifaceted perspective]
  • Through Christianity, students will steadily acquire the common sense and general education of a member of society, as well as the ethical standards of an engineer, and the ability to act with consideration for the relationship between science and technology, nature, and society.   • Acquire knowledge and academic ability in mathematics, natural science, and engineering fundamentals, and acquire the ability to apply this knowledge to problem-solving [Knowledge and application ability in mathematics, science, and technology]
  • Acquire basic knowledge and skills related to information technology and acquire the ability to use them in the real world [Information Technology Skills and Application Ability]

The ideal student for this department
  • Students have the basic academic ability necessary to study in this department, and are interested and motivated to study and work in the fields of environment, civil engineering, and architecture.
  • Based on the knowledge acquired in this department, students will be able to consider various technical issues in relation to each other and have the motivation to develop the ability to think things through in order to respond to the diverse needs of society.
  • Students will develop the communication skills necessary for working adults and engineers, and have the motivation to acquire the basic lifestyle habits necessary for trustworthy members of society.

Undergraduate learning objectives

In the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering, in accordance with the university's "Policy on Degree Awarding," the following are the learning objectives for the undergraduate program.

They recognize the importance of engineering ethics and understand the impact that infrastructure construction has on nature and society.

Along with the qualities that should be cultivated as a person, such as "having an attitude of striving to live well" and "being able to perceive and think about things from a broad and diverse perspective," as stated in our university's "Policy on Degree Conferral," we also fully recognize the importance of engineering ethics in order to fulfill our responsibilities as engineers.

In addition to the fundamental skills required of an engineer, they possess a strong foundation in environmental engineering, civil engineering, and architecture.

Students acquire fundamental engineering knowledge in fields such as mathematics, physics, and information technology, and based on that knowledge, they also acquire basic experimental and design techniques.

They understand the system for comprehensively considering and managing design, construction, and maintenance.

You will be able to understand the concepts and methodologies related to design, construction, and maintenance/management, taking into consideration safety, economy, functionality, and the environment, and to relate them to the actual process.

I can understand the various problems in social infrastructure development and propose solutions.

Students will be able to independently identify challenges regarding the development of social infrastructure in light of societal demands, select appropriate solutions to those challenges, and propose and present them.
