Ⅰ Japanese Psychological Association Certified Psychologist

This is a new qualification established in June 1990, and is awarded to individuals who have resided in Japan for a total of two years or more since the age of 16 and who have completed a basic psychology curriculum at a four-year university as defined by the School Education Act. The qualification is certified by the Japanese Psychological Association.

To obtain this qualification, students must complete the subjects specified in the attached table. At this university, this qualification is available to students in the Department of Human Sciences (students admitted in 2003-2004) and Department of Human Science (students admitted in 2005-2022 and transfer students admitted in 2023).

II. Courses required to obtain the "Certified Psychologist by the Japanese Psychological Association" qualification

1. Course requirements for certification

You must meet the following conditions and acquire a total of 36 or more credits.

1. You must acquire at least 4 credits each in the basic subjects a and c areas, and a total of at least 8 credits in the b and c areas, for a total of at least 12 credits.
2. You must acquire at least 4 credits in at least 3 of the 5 elective subjects d through h, for a total of 16 credits or more.
3. The remaining 8 units should be obtained and used in areas a through i.
4. A graduation thesis can be counted towards "other subjects" (i) for up to 4 credits.
5. Each subject area, excluding "Other Subjects," is classified into "Basic Subjects" and "Subjects." At least two of the required credits for each area must belong to the "Basic Subjects." The remaining credits may belong to the "Subjects" (note that credits for subject-specific courses are counted as half of the university credits).

2. Relationship with courses offered at this university

The attached table lists the subjects and areas required for obtaining certification as a certified psychologist, along with the corresponding courses offered at this university. Please note that the curriculum for Faculty of Liberal Arts of Liberal Arts at this university was revised in 2019. The relevant courses may differ depending on the year of enrollment.

Appendix 1 applies to students who enrolled or transferred in or after the 2019 academic year, while Appendix 2 applies to students who enrolled between the 2015 and 2018 academic years.

III. Costs and procedures for qualification application

In principle, applicants should apply to the Japanese Psychological Association, but it is advisable to consult with the psychology research laboratory or a psychology faculty member at this university beforehand. Additionally, a review fee of 11,000 yen and an accreditation fee of 33,000 yen are required.

• Note 4: In addition to the subjects listed in the table above, "Literature Reading A" and "Literature Reading B" may fall under "Other Subjects" i. area depending on the instructor and course content.
• Note 5: In the table above, the following subjects are related to the Certified Clinical Psychologist program and are not recognized as credits towards graduation: Psychology of Persons with Disabilities and Children with Disabilities, Welfare Psychology, Forensic and Criminal Psychology, Neuroscience (Structure and Function of the Human Body and Diseases), Mental Illness and its Treatment, Psychological Exercises, and Psychological Internships. Please take note of this when enrolling in these courses.
