Tohoku Gakuin University Emergency Grant Scholarship Regulations
(the purpose)
Article 1
- This regulation aims to provide scholarships (hereinafter referred to as "emergency grant scholarships") to students enrolled at Tohoku Gakuin University (hereinafter referred to as "the University") who, despite having excellent academic motivation and character, experience a sudden change in their household financial situation after enrollment due to the death of their primary breadwinner (excluding deaths due to natural disasters), illness, unemployment, separation, etc., making it difficult for them to continue their studies.
(Qualification criteria)
Article 2
- Students who receive scholarships under these regulations (hereinafter referred to as "emergency scholarship recipients") must meet the following requirements:
- Undergraduate and Graduate Schools students enrolled at this university who understand the university's educational policies, are highly motivated to study, and have excellent conduct.
- Those who require assistance with paying student tuition fees due to a sudden change in their household financial situation.
(Benefit amount)
Article 3
- The amount of the emergency grant scholarship will be equivalent to the tuition fee payable in the semester in which the scholarship is awarded.
(Period and number of payments)
Article 4
- The emergency grant scholarship will be provided only for the semester in which the student is selected, and will be paid only once during their enrollment.
(Application period)
Article 5
- Those wishing to receive the emergency grant scholarship may apply at any time within a period not exceeding 12 months from the date on which the event causing a sudden change in household financial circumstances occurred. However, applications for the graduation and completion year cannot be submitted after January 31st.
(Application documents)
Article 6
- Those wishing to receive the emergency grant scholarship must submit the following documents.
- Scholarship application form (statement)
- Documents proving a sudden change in household finances
- Proof of income of the household's primary breadwinner
- Other documents that the university may request as needed
(Selection criteria)
Article 7
- The selection criteria for emergency grant recipients shall be as specified in the corresponding number, according to the following categories.
- The applicant's character, attitude, and behavior must be appropriate for a student, and they must be deemed to have the potential to become a responsible member of society in the future.
- Household finances: In cases where a household's annual expenditures have increased significantly or its annual income has decreased significantly due to a sudden change in household finances, and it is expected that economic difficulties will continue.
- Academic ability: All of the following conditions must be met.
- A. At the time of application, there must be no overlap in the same academic year for reasons other than leave of absence.
- (i) For students in their second year or higher, undergraduate students must have earned at least the number of credits up to the current year obtained by dividing the number of credits required for graduation by the length of study. For students in the first and second years of doctoral programs, they must have earned at least 8 credits in the previous year. However, for students in the second year of doctoral programs, the number of credits earned is not a requirement regardless of the academic year.
(Hiring and notification)
Article 8
- The selection of recipients of the Emergency Grant Scholarship will be decided by the President of Tohoku Gakuin University after deliberation by the Tohoku Gakuin University Scholarship Management Committee (hereinafter referred to as the "Management Committee").
- When a recipient is selected for the emergency grant scholarship, they will be promptly notified in the name of the Tohoku Gakuin University Scholarship Association President.
(Payment period)
Article 9
- Emergency grant scholarships will be disbursed promptly after the selection of emergency grant recipients.
(Notification of change)
Article 10
- If an emergency grant recipient falls under any of the following categories during the grant period, they must promptly notify the authorities using the prescribed form.
- When applying for a leave of absence or withdrawal from school (excluding death).
- When requesting to decline the benefit.
(Loss of eligibility for benefits)
Article 11
- If an emergency grant recipient falls under any of the following categories, they will lose their eligibility for the scholarship.
- When a student takes a leave of absence or drops out of school (excluding death).
- When it was discovered that the applicant had made false statements on their application documents to become an emergency scholarship recipient.
- When the refusal of the benefit is approved.
- When a disciplinary action is taken within this university.
(Repayment of scholarships)
Article 12
- The Tohoku Gakuin University Scholarship Association may require an emergency grant recipient to repay any scholarship funds already disbursed during the semester if they lose their eligibility for the scholarship under the preceding article.
(Handling of students who have received disciplinary action)
Article 13
- Notwithstanding the provisions of Article 11, paragraph 4, students who have completed their disciplinary period and meet the conditions in each of the following paragraphs will be eligible to apply for an emergency grant scholarship, provided that they also meet the criteria of Article 7.
- The student must demonstrate genuine remorse and be deemed suitable as a scholarship recipient by the university president.
- You must have completed the procedures related to the abolished scholarship.
- When making an application related to item (i) of the preceding paragraph, the student must contact the Student Affairs Section of the Student Affairs Department and undergo an interview.
(Administrative)
Article 14
- All matters related to these regulations will be handled by the Student Affairs Division of the Student Services Department.
(Revision/Abolition)
Article 15
- Any amendment or repeal of these regulations shall be initiated by the Steering Committee, approved by the Faculty Council, carried out by the President, and then approved by the Board of Directors.
- Supplementary provisions
- These regulations shall come into effect on April 1, 2026.
