System Overview

The Tohoku Gakuin University Reserved Entrance Grant Scholarship (LIGHT UP Scholarship) is a scholarship program that aims to alleviate the financial burden during the enrollment process, serving as a guiding light for students who strongly desire to enroll at the university, in line with "LIGHT," one of the school mottos of Tohoku Gakuin University, "LIFE LIGHT LOVE."

Applicants for the "New System for Supporting Higher Education" are also eligible to apply.

Features of the LIGHT ​Up Scholarship

The benefit amount * is

Up to 994,000 yen

*For the Faculty of Faculty of Engineering.
The amount of the grant varies depending on the faculty.

Significantly reduces the burden of the enrollment process.
The LIGHT UP scholarship defers the payment of student fees during the enrollment process, which is the most financially burdensome stage, and provides the scholarship after enrollment.
The only fees you pay during the enrollment process are miscellaneous expenses, allowing you to start your campus life without putting a strain on your household budget.
Reservation-based for peace of mind
This is a reservation-type selection process where candidates are chosen before the pass/fail decision of the selection exam is made.
This is a grant-type scholarship, so it does not need to be repaid.
Since this is a grant-type scholarship, you do not need to repay it after graduation.

Furthermore, after enrollment, you can apply for and receive the "Tohoku Gakuin University Grant Scholarship" from the second semester onwards (a scholarship for enrolled students, with applications accepted in the first and second semesters, providing 100,000 yen per semester, up to a maximum of 200,000 yen per year) if you are selected*.

  • *Applications are accepted twice a year, in the first and second semesters, and applications must be submitted each time. While the selection process is based on the degree of financial hardship and academic performance, the decision is made based on the household's financial situation at the time of application, so acceptance is not guaranteed.
  • *Please note that the details of the Tohoku Gakuin University grant scholarship may change after enrollment.
1. Target

Applicants for admission to this university (excluding transfer students and Graduate Schools students)

2. Number of available positions

Up to 60 students, regardless of faculty or department.

3. Payment period

At the time of enrollment and during the first semester of the enrollment year.

4. Benefit amount

The amount payable by the student at the time of enrollment (excluding miscellaneous fees) during the year of enrollment.

*For those eligible for the "New System for Supporting Higher Education," student fees paid during the enrollment process will be deferred at the time of enrollment, and the difference in tuition and other fee reductions under the new system will be applied as this scholarship after enrollment. Those who have received tuition and other fee reductions under the new system are not eligible to receive the full amount of this scholarship.

5. Restrictions on receiving other scholarships concurrently.

This scholarship cannot be received concurrently with the Tohoku Gakuin University Grant Scholarship for the first semester of the enrollment year.

*Applications are accepted from the second semester of the academic year.

Application Procedure (For students entering in 2027)

The preliminary application form and checklist will be available for download approximately one month before the preliminary application period (②).

② Submit a preliminary application.

Please mail the required documents to the university within the application period specified below.

    *This applies to selection examinations conducted by December 2026. (School recommendation-based selection, comprehensive selection, etc.)

  • Phase II: Deadline: December 1st (Tue) - December 22nd (Tue), 2026 (tentative)

    *This applies to selection examinations conducted between January 2027 and March 2027. (General selection, selection using the Common University Entrance Examination, etc.)

  • "Taxation (or Non-Taxation) Certificate for Fiscal Year 2026" (issued by the municipality) for the household's primary income earner.

  • A self-addressed stamped envelope (size 3 envelope, with the applicant's address and name written on the recipient's side)

③ Announcement of selection results for preliminary applications
  • Phase I: Notification will be sent by mail around mid-October 2026.
  • Phase II: Notification will be sent by mail around late January 2027.
④ Take the selection exam
⑤ Enrollment procedures
If a person selected as a candidate in step ③ passes the selection examination in step ④, the payment of student fees at the time of enrollment will be deferred.
⑥ Submit your formal application after enrollment.
Candidates will receive information about the formal application process around the end of March. Official acceptance will be granted upon submission of the formal application after enrollment.
After being officially hired, the funds will be used to pay student fees during the enrollment process.

What kind of scholarship is the LIGHT UP Scholarship, a pre-enrollment grant?
The Tohoku Gakuin University Reserved Entrance Grant Scholarship, "LIGHT UP Scholarship," is named after "LIGHT," one of the school mottos of Tohoku Gakuin University, "LIFE LIGHT LOVE." It is a scholarship program aimed at reducing the financial burden during the enrollment process, serving as a guiding light for students who strongly desire to enroll at the university. By deferring student tuition fees during the enrollment process, which is the most financially burdensome time, and then applying the deferred amount to student tuition fees after enrollment, the scholarship provides financial assistance, thereby reducing the financial burden at the time of enrollment.
Applicants for the "New System for Supporting Higher Education" (a grant scholarship from the Japan Student Services Organization) are also eligible to apply, however, those eligible for the "New System for Supporting Higher Education" will receive a reduced amount of this scholarship (it is not possible to receive the full amount of both).
Is it a scholarship that needs to be repaid?
This is a grant-type scholarship that does not need to be repaid.
How much will I receive as a scholarship?
This is the amount equivalent to the student fees payable at the time of enrollment. Faculty of Letters (Department of English, Department of General Humanities, Department of History), Faculty Faculty of Economics, Faculty of Business Administration Administration, and Faculty Faculty of Law, it is 785,000 yen; for the Faculty Faculty of Engineering, it is 994,000 yen; for the Faculty Faculty of Letters (Department of Education), Faculty Faculty of Regional Studies, Faculty of Human Sciences, and Faculty Faculty of International Studies, it is 852,000 yen; and for Faculty of Informatics, it is 887,000 yen (reference for students entering in 2026). However, for those eligible for the "New System for Supporting Higher Education," the difference in tuition and other fees will be provided as this scholarship.
Regarding eligibility requirements and selection criteria
Please tell me about the eligibility requirements and household income criteria.
This program is for students admitted to this university (excluding transfer students and Graduate Schools students) who are experiencing financial hardship and are unable to continue their studies. The condition is that the taxable income (total income minus income deductions) of the household's primary breadwinner (parents or the person supporting the household in place of the parents) must be below the income threshold set by this university.
Because there is a limited number of positions available, priority will be given to those in the most difficult circumstances. Therefore, even if you meet the criteria, you are not guaranteed to be hired. Thank you for your understanding.
Please tell me about the academic achievement standards.
Regarding academic requirements, passing the university's selection examination is a prerequisite.
What kind of tax (or tax-exempt) certificate should I submit for the household's primary income earner?
Please submit your tax (or non-tax) certificate for the 2026 fiscal year (income for 2025 (Reiwa 7)). Certificates are required for both parents or the person who supports the household on behalf of the parents, and the certificate must include: ① total income amount (gross income amount, etc.), ② breakdown of income, and ③ total income deductions.
Regarding the preliminary application
If I applied in Phase I and was not selected, can I apply again in Phase II?
Even if your application is not accepted in the preliminary application period for Phase I, you can still apply in Phase II. Furthermore, even if your application is accepted in the preliminary application period for Phase I but you fail the selection examination held by December of the same year, you can still submit a preliminary application again in Phase II.
My high school recommendation decision will be made after the preliminary application period for Phase I. Is it okay for me to submit a preliminary application?
Applications submitted after the preliminary application period will not be accepted, so we recommend submitting a preliminary application even before the recommendation decision is made.
I applied in the first round of applications, expecting to be recommended by my high school, and was accepted, but I wasn't recommended. If I take the general entrance exam and pass, will I be accepted even without applying in advance?
To be accepted through the general selection process, you must submit a preliminary application for Phase II. Even if you are selected in Phase I, you must submit a preliminary application for Phase II if you wish to take the general selection exam.
Can I withdraw my application after it has been provisionally accepted due to acceptance to another university, etc.? If so, are there any penalties?
This scholarship is intended for applicants who have a strong desire to enroll at this university. Please refrain from applying if you wish to enroll at another university.

Is it okay to select multiple test types on the preliminary application form?

I haven't decided on the type of exam by the deadline for submitting the preliminary application form. Is it okay to leave that section blank?
If, for any reason such as the timing of school recommendations, the type of examination you will take has not been decided by the deadline for submitting your preliminary application, please select all possible examination types.
Regarding benefits
When will the payment be made?
The payment of student fees at the time of enrollment will be deferred, and the grant will be applied to the student fees after enrollment. At the time of enrollment, only miscellaneous fees will be paid (for reference: 29,500 yen for undergraduate students entering in 2026).
After receiving the grant upon enrollment, are there any other forms of support available?
This scholarship provides support only at the time of enrollment. However, from the second semester of the enrollment year onward, you can apply for and receive the Tohoku Gakuin University Grant Scholarship each semester if you are selected.
If I drop out of university after receiving the grant, am I obligated to repay it?
If you withdraw from the university during the first semester of your enrollment year, you will be required to repay any scholarships you have received.
About other scholarships
If I apply for the LIGHT UP Scholarship (a pre-enrollment grant), can I still apply for the Japan Student Services Organization's pre-enrollment scholarship (loan or grant) or other scholarships?
Applications are accepted. However, students eligible for tuition fee reductions under the "New System for Supporting Higher Education" will receive the difference in tuition fee reduction amount as a pre-enrollment grant scholarship (it is not possible to receive the full amount of both). Scholarships from external organizations can also be used in conjunction, but some scholarships have restrictions, so it is necessary to check. Please note that Tohoku Gakuin University grant scholarships cannot be used in conjunction with the pre-enrollment grant scholarship during the first semester of the enrollment year.
Besides the pre-enrollment grant scholarship (LIGHT UP Scholarship), are there any other grant-type scholarship programs unique to the university?
Tohoku Gakuin University offers two types of scholarships: the Tohoku Gakuin University Grant Scholarship (100,000 yen per semester), which can be applied for each semester after enrollment, and the Tohoku Gakuin University Emergency Grant Scholarship (equivalent to the tuition fee for that semester), which can be applied for only once during your enrollment if your household finances suddenly change. Please note that if you receive the Reserved Enrollment Grant Scholarship <LIGHT UP Scholarship> in the first semester of your enrollment year, you cannot use the Tohoku Gakuin University Grant Scholarship in conjunction with it.
Can I use both the LIGHT UP Scholarship (a pre-enrollment grant) and the East Japan Regional Scholarship Selection grants in conjunction?
As a system for students with outstanding academic performance upon enrollment, we have been accepting applications for the East Japan Regional Scholarship Selection since the 2024 academic year entrance examination. This scholarship can be received concurrently with the reserved enrollment grant scholarship, the <LIGHT UP Scholarship>. Furthermore, even if you are not selected for the East Japan Regional Scholarship Selection, we also have a special scholarship system for outstanding students from their second year onward, for students with particularly excellent academic performance in the previous year.
