Disaster relief volunteer work in Tagajo (Kumazawa Seminar)

In late November, I participated as a volunteer in work at Tagajo Farm, run by the Tagajo Earthquake Reconstruction and Community Development Company, a non-profit organization responsible for the reconstruction project in Tagajo City (9 students and 1 faculty member). Tagajo Farm is a project located at the Tagajo Ruins, a national special historic site, that aims to create employment opportunities for disaster victims and people with disabilities.

I helped harvest the broccoli.

Each one is carefully cut with scissors. Since it is grown without pesticides, insect removal is also done by hand.

I made a flower bed.

We'll use the stones that came out when we tilled the field to surround the flower bed.

I helped with preparing the soil.

Remove any old roots or stones.

With the staff.

After finishing the work, we took a commemorative photo with all the staff. We were blessed with fine weather, and the farm work was very enjoyable. It was a valuable experience that allowed us to learn about one approach to community development. (The flowerbed in the foreground is the completed flowerbed.)
