It's not "younashi" (pear). It's La France pear.
The cover of the brochure for Department of Co-existing Society Studies features a La France pear. It's a fruit with a charming shape, but do you know why it's used?
When the Faculty of Faculty of Economics was reorganized in 2009, each of the three departments featured a fruit in its departmental brochure. Department of Co-existing Society Studies considered various options for its image color and ultimately decided on the La France pear.
There were many twists and turns before the La France pear was finally chosen.
Actually, the melon was a strong contender. Not only is it luxurious, but I thought that the netted pattern on the melon was like a symbol of a network, of interconnectedness.
And then there's the green apple. Above all, it evokes an image of youth. Furthermore, apples are also a symbol of wisdom, so we thought it was a fitting image for a university.
Furthermore, citrus fruits such as limes, sweeties, and sudachi were also considered. The characteristic of citrus fruits is that they have many segments. Each segment contains countless berries, and I thought this was like many people belonging to different groups, with many groups coexisting within a society.
Despite having such strong contenders, the pear variety was ultimately our choice.
Freshly harvested La France pears may be hard and not look very appetizing. However, as they ripen, they soften and release a refreshing, firm sweetness and a rich aroma. It is a fruit that the French, who are very particular about both beauty and food culture, named after their homeland, France.
Department of Co-existing Society Studies may still be unfamiliar to some. However, as our students deepen their learning, Department of Co-existing Society Studies will also mature. We believe in the future potential of Department of Co-existing Society Studies based on economics. And above all, we hope that it will be a department where students with wonderful talents and potential can hone those talents and greatly expand their possibilities.
