IIa: Reflecting on our lives through tropical rainforest experiences

This course will take you to Malaysia. When you hear the word Malaysia, what comes to mind? Hot, Islam, orangutans, or perhaps nothing in particular comes to mind for some. Located near the equator, this country is divided into the Malay Peninsula to the west and Borneo Island to the east, separated by the South China Sea. While there are differences in climate, politics, and society, both regions have long had ties with Japan. This course will primarily focus on experiencing the tropical rainforests of Sarawak, located on the eastern side of the country, and the lives of the people who live there. Through this experience, we aim to cultivate a perspective and sensibility that allows you to consider the nature, people, and surrounding events of tropical Asia in relation to your own life in Japan.
